Saturday 02.26.11: LA RECORD presents DEATH / RTX / SIC ALPS @ Echoplex

When Death’s 1974 demos, …For the Whole World to See, were finally excavated in 2009, they proved the missing link between the Stooges’ “No Fun” and Bad Brains’ “Pay to Cum.” Ultimately, the three Hackney brothers turned from furious garage-punk to mellow reggae, wholly forgotten by history. Dug up from the basement of a defunct Detroit studio, this set of hissy practice tapes varies greatly in quality with the demented trashing of a Beatles melody on “The Masks” and the snotty sneer of “Can You Give Me a Thrill???” abutting stoned instrumentals and solo noodling. SPIN
Sic Alps are a noise pop group from San Francisco consisting of Matt Hartman (formerly of Henry’s Dress), Mike Donovan and Noel Von Harmonson. Sic Alps’ sound could be described as a combination of early nineties lo-fi and Bay Area’s sixties psychedelia. Even though Sic Alps are a fairly new band, they’re already notorious for their exciting and energetic live performances. They have released music on Siltbreeze, Mt. St. Mtn, 777 was 666, Animal Disguise, Skulltones, Almost Ready, Slumberland and Drag City. LAST FM
RTX, fronted by the goddess of hard rock deconstruction bursts through the doors with guns ablaze on their latest Western Xterminator, vacillating between mushroom-hazy psychedelic numbers like the opening title track, vocals sounding like they were forced through a hookah into an echo chamber, and Motor City endgame blasts like “Dude Love” and “Restoration Sleep” reeling off into the night like Guns N Roses interpreting the Book of Revelations. It is consciously over the top, but shows a demented dedication to the rock of all our misspent youths and hopefully, our mismanaged futures. OUTSIDE LEFT
