Papercranes is the musical home of Rain Phoenix. Born as a studio project in L.A., papercranes quickly grew into a band splitting time between Gainesville, Florida and New York City. After a self-released EP in 2003 and debut album “Vidalia” in 2006, papercranes played frequently, touring the US with their folk-tinged psychedelic sound. In late 2008, with the help of some of Rain’s longtime friends, musicians, and writers she began work on papercranes sophomore album, “Let’s Make Babies in the Woods”. The recording sessions were experimental, allowing no rest or retakes as an exercise in ‘stream of consciousness’ writing – a recurring theme for papercranes. Due to the intensity of the sessions and the non linear production style she favored, there’s a rawness to this record untapped in papercranes earlier works. Recorded in a garage studio in Los Angeles, the resulting nine-song collection delves into much darker themes. This is evident in songs like “Shell”, “Synapses” and “Dust Season” where desolate imagery meet rebellious melody and angry rhythms. Whereas tracks like “Warrior”, “Headphones” and “Long Way” seem almost biographical with observances that are poetic yet accessible.Manimal Vinyl

Cameras || Listen||Bandcamp
CAMERAS consist primarily of vocalist/keyboardist, Eleanor Dunlop and vocalist/guitarist Fraser Harvey. In Your Room is the full-length follow up to the release of a successful self-titled EP (2010) and single (2009′s “June’). The band formed in 2008, in Sydney, Australia, after Eleanor and Fraser discovered a mutual love for layering darker, dirtier sounds with warmer, lighter melodies. The music that they have gone onto create is atmospheric and cinematic and will strike a chord with fans of Bowie, The National, Radiohead, Cat Power and Mazzy Star.

In Your Room is a sonically complete album reminiscent of early Interpol and 90’s Pulp that will certainly put CAMERAS on this fall’s buzz band radar.Manimal Vinyl

The Child
Hailing from the wilderness of coastal California, The Child are a band filled with immense and unearthly paradox. Like a wild animal found deep within the crystal caverns of the subconscious brought to the concrete jungle and taught to function within the confines of the human’s social world. Holly Marilyn, a wild child and performer since the age of 5 who eventually found herself honing her acrobatic stage antics in the city of Minneapolis before escaping to the west coast to live amongst the aliens that beckoned her name since youth. Norm Block, a wise Russian cleric whom has been sought to advise and aid musicians ranging from Plexi, Sweet Head, Mark Lanegan and papercranes. These two wandering souls found each other amongst the starry night skies during a winter’s solstice 2008 AD.

Recording over 20 tracks during the first half of 2011, The Child was fostered by Los Angeles upstart label MANIMAL (Warpaint, Bat for Lashes, Papercranes, Sister Crayon) to release their debut 6 track EP titled simply The Child. The EP’s lead single “Boomerang” comes accompanied with a brilliant video directed by New York photographer, director and playwright Nathaniel Hunt and stars Marilyn and Block along with Antony Langdon and a slew of Hollywood aliens. The songs themselves embody the unorthodox mecca vs. orga method in which electronic sounds are bred with acoustic and electric guitars and live complex textured drums. When the calling for The Child to perform live, they incorporated two members, Lauren White (aka Lauren Rocket) on synths/vocals and Peter Simon on bass guitar. All tracks are produced by Norm Block in Silverlake, California.Manimal Vinyl

Guineafowl || Listen||Watch
Guineafowl (the person – also known to some as Sam Yeldham) began writing music as a solo DIY artist about a year and a half ago, singing into his laptop microphone and using techniques to sound as if he was part of a full band. He had the desire to do live shows, but found the process of trying to replicate the layered sounds of his songs as a one-man show a bit trying. It was then that he came to the realization that he needed a proper band to be able to provide the experience of his music, and was able to get hooked up with other local musicians from Sydney through his friendship with bassist Lachlan McQueen – it was then that Guineafowl (the band) was hatched.

Yeldham is responsible for the songwriting and the vision of the band, and has created music that is, frankly, quite simple and easy to enjoy – complete with bouncy and danceable beats, catchy guitar riffs and lyrical hooks that make an imprint in your brain – you’ll find yourself singing them to yourself over and over. In the short time the band has been together, they have performed in pedestrian locations like backyards and kitchens in order to perfect their craft. The practice has paid off, and Guineafowl has made waves in Australia, having won a SMAC award for “Best Sydney Song” for In Our Circles, and having recently been signed by record label Dew Process.My Spoonful
