Posted by damara - filed in 21+, Dance Night, echoplex, events

downandderbymar18

The Los Angeles event is set apart from Down and Derby parties in other cities by its authentic 70s feel. The resident DJs don’t just spin popular tunes for which the era has become known—they reach into the depths of 70s music to bring partiers the obscure hits that may not be recognizable by most, but are truly indicative of the culture and lifestyle of the era.

Down and Derby, is a retro-inspired roller-skating party created and designed to give attendees a unique nightlife experience. The interactive throwback events combine décor reminiscent of a 70s roller disco with attendees participating through wearing fashion attire evocative of the era. DJs known for pushing the limits of mixing and music production are procured, adding vibrant energy to the event with both underground and popular mixes.

The entry fee is $5 with RSVP, $10 at the door and quad skates of every size will be available to rent for another $5. Guests are welcome to bring their own roller skates to the event.

BOOTIE LA
LA’s monthly mashup bootleg party

Direct from the UK! Britain’s best mashup producer:
THE KLEPTONES

Resident Bootie DJ:
DJ PAUL V.

Special guest DJ:
DJ SHYBOY

Midnight Mashup Show:
ANNA KONDA as Lady Gaga

Direct from the UK, Bootie LA is proud to present a rare Stateside appearance from The Kleptones, one of Britain’s best mashup producers. Since 2003, they’ve released six full-length mashup albums — all for free on the internet — including the seminal Queen bootleg album, “A Night At The Hip-Hopera.” Their recently-released double album — their first in two years — immediately blew up the blogosphere with its dual sides: “Uptime” provides the Bootie dance floor bangers, while “Downtime” plays the role of a chilled-out after-party.

Special guest DJ Shyboy joins resident DJ Paul V. on the decks throughout the night, and for the Midnight Mashup Show, it’s the return of Anna Konda, who will be channeling a mashed-up performance of Lady Gaga.

Launched in 2003, Bootie was the first club night in the United States dedicated solely to the burgeoning artform of the bootleg mashup — and is now the biggest mashup event in the world, with monthly parties in eight cities on three continents. Mixing and matching every conceivable musical genre, era, and style into one big dance party where everyone feels welcome, Bootie provides the soundtrack for the A.D.D. generation.

Resident DJs Adrian, Mysterious D, and Paul V. keep your brain guessing and body dancing with creative song combinations, celebrating — and satirizing — the many different forms of music. And free mashup CDs will be given away like candy!

So I’m sure you guys all know we’re opening the Los Angeles chapter of Мишка on February 20th in Echo Park. The shop will open at noon and there will be exclusives, Spring 2010 product and just an all-around jovial atmosphere. From 7-9pm we’ll also be having an opening reception in the shop with some drinks and music and invite everyone from the community and greater Los Angeles area to come by. But as soon as that’s over we’re going to show the West one of those things we do best, and that’s throw a party! And boy do we have a party for you guys…

It’ll be a riotous evening as we brought in DJs like your West Coast Dubstep Champion, 12th Planet who’ll be doing a set w/ Ras Kass (yes that Ras Kass), Franki Chan of IHEARTCOMIX and the Killing Spree duo of Gibby & Zane is Trouble who’ll bring the dark and dancey to the dance floor. And if that wasn’t already enough for a great party, we couldn’t not have a few bands perform now could we? We brought in West Coast Lo-Fi heavy weight such as Wavves and Best Coast along with very awesome The Franks to keep the party rocking all night long. But wait… that still isn’t everything! The cherry on top of it all is that your host of the evening will be none other than Andy Milonakis, who’ll be gracing you all with laughs and I’m sue a few impromptu freestyles. Who knows, he may even battle the elusive Turd Wolf if we get enough liquor in him.

Resident Bootie DJs:

DJ PAUL V.

Midnight Mashup Show: resident dance crew
R.A.I.D. (Random Acts of Irreverent Dance) –

BOOTIE BERLIN is coming to LA! DJ MORGOTH, the party-starter behind Bootie’s branch in Berlin, is the infamous creator of last year’s Rick-Rolling internet meme sensation, the ridiculous Rick Astley vs. Nirvana mashup, “Never Gonna Give Your Teen Spirit Up,” which got over two million views on YouTube before being pulled down. The video garnered media attention around the world, from VH1’s “Best Week Ever”, to The Guardian UK, to Justin Timberlake’s own web site!

And for the Midnight Mashup Show, resident dance crew R.A.I.D. (Random Acts of Irreverent Dance) will take over the stage in all their gold-suited glory for another show-stopping dance performance.

Launched in 2003, Bootie was the first club night in the United States dedicated solely to the burgeoning artform of the bootleg mashup — and is now the biggest mashup event in the world, with monthly parties in eight cities on three continents. The Delta Mirror || Listen || Watch || MP3

A certain strain of recent indie rock seems to be taking an unusual interest in illness and death. You could blame Arcade Fire, the sad loss of whose family members only happened to lead to one of the most universally acclaimed independent releases of the past decade. Last year, the Antlers’ Hospice focused an entire album on the subject of a man with terminal bone cancer. Now L.A. trio the Delta Mirror’s upcoming Lefse debut, Machines That Listen, sets each of its nine songs in a different room of the hospital.
This slow, layered ballad “He Was Worse Than the Needle He Gave You” stands out not for its pathos-ridden subject matter– I’m still not sure I know exactly what it’s about– but rather its restrained emotional gutpunch, which it achieves with a simple but catchy tune and dramatically expansive production. Imagine the Big Pink’s electro-shoegaze explosions sounding vulnerable. “I’ve got too much time on my hands,” goes a gothy male vocal, and before long we find out the reason why– and the guy responsible won’t fucking be held responsible. The next time the Delta Mirror sing those words, at the end of the song, their meaning has changed. Damage done. – Pitchfork

Haven’t posted a 15 minute plus track on here in ages – actually, come to think of it I’m not sure I ever have, which is a travesty as most of the best songs stretch to a good quarter of an hour.

LA’s The Frequency aren’t afraid to take you on a pyschedelic meander and this opus clocks in at 17′34″, rinsing your ears with woozy slide guitar for a quick four minutes before taking you off to planet pachouli for an epic trip that’s by turns Jonestowny, Floydy and Spiritualizedy.

So slow down, stop, turn off Twitter and shut out the outside world for a bit. Or play Battleships. – NME

A Night of Roots and Culture

RAS MICHAEL and the Sons of Negus
mixed by Scientist

with special guests:
All Star Sabar Orchestra

and a acoustic set from:
Claudius Linton

Ras Michael was born George Michael Henry in Kingston, Jamaica. He grew up in the Rastafarian community in the ghettos of Kingston. He is known throughout the world as a reggae vocalist and Nyabinghi drum specialist whose style is the heartbeat of roots reggae.

In the early 60’s, Ras Michael formed the Sons of Negus, a rastafarian group of drummers and singers who had grown up in the tradition of burra drumming, one of the few surviving remnants of their African heritage. In Jamaica, the burra and kumina drums first sounded to celebrate the religious and social gatherings of the African people in Jamaica. Gradually, the Rastaman took over, beating the drums at their prayer meetings, or groundations. While Ras Michael’s music is drawn from an amalgam of biblical and African chants, he distinguished himself from the other drummers in the early Rastafarian movements by forging the connection between the traditional hand drums and the modern electric instruments used in commercial music, thereby taking his message of equal rights and unity from a few scattered communities in Jamaica’s parishes out to the entire world.

Ras Michael has worked, recorded and performed with some of the most legendary musicians in the world, including Peter Tosh, Lee Perry, Burning Spear, Stevie Wonder and Roberta Flack. He performed with Bob Marley at the One Love Peace Concert in Jamaica in 1978. Later that year, Marley was asked what he thought of Ras Michael. “Ras Michael is a roots master and a Nyabinghi specialist” he said. “He tells it like it is.” Ras Michael has recorded more than 24 albums over the years, including the memorable Kibir Am Lak (Glory to God) , Rastafari Dub featuring Peter Tosh, Robbie Shakespeare, and Earl “Chinna” Smith , Love Thy Neighbor ),and Zion Train .His tune “None Of Jah Jah Children No Cry” is a reggae anthem. Ras Michael is one of the founders and president of the Rastafarian International/Marcus Garvey Culture Center in Los Angeles, and and he continues to tour internationally .”The music is spreading” Ras Michael says, “and the people are getting more of an understanding. Without the one drop hard-core reggae music, without the Nyabinghi drop, reggae would not be reggae and have no true identity. It brings the elders, it brings the old man, it brings the young guys, it brings the ghetto people, the uptown people, downtown and suburbs…everyone, with true expressions of themselves, so it is reality.”

The All Star Sabar Orchestra is a young group of musicians recently arrived in LA from Dakar , Senegal where they were frequent performers in the nightclubs and cultural gatherings of that African capitol. Composed of 5 percussionist/vocalists , their music is a modern urban take on traditional styles. They rap in the Wolof language over intricate and fiery drumming in the “Bayefaal” mode.

At the mixing board for both of the bands will be the dubmaster Scientist. The late King Tubby is generally recognized as the father of Dub music, the style of reggae known for heavy drum and bass tones and wild reverb and echoes. Scientist was Tubbys apprentice and learned at his side, mixing reggae records from the age of 13 onwards. Many of Scientists albums are dub classics , such as “Scientist Rids The World of the Evil Curse of the Vampires”. With him at the controls the bass will be in the place!

The foursome’s debut EP, which will be out after the first of the year, is the stuff of late nights and distant horizons, taut and expansive and cinematic and not a little bit Floydian. Its title is “Is the Painting Changing?” — and no matter whether the metaphorical painting is, it’s certain that Bauer, who led the Fugazi-inspired trio the Front until the band broke up on Jan. 1, 2008, has. He calls it a “natural progression,” but it’s more a startling metamorphosis, one that Bauer attributes to the friendship and tutelage of guitarist Michael Regilio.

“The Front was the band where I drank whiskey, turned up my guitar real loud and shouted into the microphone,” he says. “In Useless Keys, I’m actually conscious of the whole package … It’s just maturing, I guess.”

Regilio was a driving force in the underrated L.A. power-pop band the Green and Yellow TV. After their respective former bands disintegrated in ’08, Bauer and Regilio would get together for lessons and jams sessions. “I saw Michael as someone I could learn a lot from — he went to Berklee, and he’s just a much better guitar player than I am,” Bauer says. “We started making demos in his bedroom, but we had no aspirations. He had something going on, I had something going on. … But then his project broke up, and I needed to plunge myself into something.”

The pair hooked up with drummer Rory Modica and bassist Guylaine Vivarat, and from their first show at Spaceland it was evident Useless Keys were a band to watch. Recent shows in New York, including one supporting the Rifles, went well, and they’ve been recording with producer Sheldon Gomberg (Rick Parker’s mix adds to the psychedelic vibe). The quartet is aiming high on its full-length album. – Buzz Bands

Friday 02.26.10: TRANNYSHACK @ echoplex

Posted by damara - filed in 21+, Dance Night, echoplex, events

trannyshackfeb26

Trannyshack LA returns, once again at Echoplex, our new home, and our biggest and best venue yet. With a line-up of the most talented trannies on the West Coast, this will be the party not to miss this season. Featuring performances by Heklina, Raya Light, Squeaky Blonde, Lady Bear, Syphilis Diller, Fade Dra, Anna Conda, Fade Dra, Rhea Litre, Alaska Thunderfuck, Phyllis Navidad, and more. Hostess Heklina and partner Cody Bayne promise a night of lipstick smeared madness, and DJ Dave Rape supplies the beats before and after the show. Drop dead diva Barbie Q will greet you at the door….

Trannyshack, San Francisco’s infamous drag performance night club, shocked and delighted packed audiences every Tuesday night at midnight for over twelve years. Defying all expectations, Trannyshack incorporated everything from low brow trash to high brow performance art, and became famous (or, infamous) worldwide as the quintessential San Francisco experience. No visit to the City was complete without a stop at Trannyshack. The club has been featured in Out (which named it one of the top 10 reasons to move to San Francisco), Genre, Instinct, and Paper magazines and won numerous Best of the Bay awards, and was filmed for an independent feature length documentary , titled “Filthy Gorgeous: The Trannyshack Story” . Trannyshack is now branching out it’s empire, with shows in LA, London, Waikiki, Seattle, Portland, New Orleans, and Reno enjoying great success.

Thursday 01.21.10: DOWN AND DERBY ROLLER DISCO @ echoplex

Posted by damara - filed in 21+, Dance Night, echoplex, events

downnderbyjan21

Wednesday 02.10.10: DUB CLUB presents COURTNEY MELODY / TIPPA LEE @ echoplex

Posted by damara - filed in 21+, Dance Night, echoplex, events

DubClubCOUTNEYMELODY

COURTNEY MELODY
with special guest TIPPA LEE
backed by Echodelic Soundsystem

Rough dancehall singer Courtney Melody was born in St. Andrew, Jamaica and began singing from when he attended school. In his early teens he started to work on a local sound system called Black Spider. He started to make a name for himself when he joined the mighty Stereo One sound system, working alongside Lieutenant Stitchie, Ricky Stereo, Boy Blue, Wolfman and Daddy Freddy.
It was Stereo One who released his first 45, an awesome soundboy burial anthem called “Screechy Across The Border”.

Courtney then went to Winston Riley’s Techniques label to voice “How Long Will Your Love Last” and “Exploiter”. These were small hits, but his next effort “Bad Boy” in 1986 propelled this young singer into international dancehall stardom. Courtney Melody then became the hottest artist in reggae music, unleashing a volley of unstoppable dancehall sides such as “Ninja Mi Ninja” and “Tell Dem” for King Tubbys; “Modern Girl” for Robert French; “Put It Down” for Harry J “Downpressor” for Prince Jazzbo; “Rootsman Corner” for Redman; and “Can’t Get We Out” for King Jammy’s. Many of these tunes remain modern-day dancehall classics.
After experiencing a motorbike accident, Courtney was forced to take a long break from the business and little was heard from Courtney throughout the 1990s, with the exception of a superb single for Star Trail called “In The Street”. Riding the “Baltimore” rhythm, this tune proved that Courtney really was a great singer, who given the opportunity and the right rhythm, still produce top quality reggae music.

The 1999 World Clash in New York was a landmark event for Courtney. Japanese sound system Mighty Crown brandished their dubplate special of “Ninja Mi Ninja” which mashed up the dance, helping the Japanese to take the trophy. Tapes of the clash went worldwide and soon every sound had to have their own specials from Courtney Melody. Suddenly his popularity rose and led to Courtney touring overseas and capitalising on his dancehall veteran status.

In 2007 he came out an excellent new album , Serious Business.

We are very excited to Courtney Melody live and direct at the Dub Club, alongside long time Dub Club favorite Tippa Lee, and backed up on the turntables by Echodelic Soundsystem.

BOOTIE LA
LA’s monthly mashup bootleg party

ALL-DISCO mashup set from:
SLASH FICTION

Resident Bootie DJs:
ADRIAN & the MYSTERIOUS D
DJ PAUL V.

Resident dance crew:
R.A.I.D. (Random Acts of Irreverent Dance)

“Disco assassins for hire” Slash Fiction hit the decks at midnight, for a special ALL-DISCO mashup set! Henry Slash and Mick Fiction are the DJ duo responsible for rockin’ the dance floor at Chinatown’s Full Frontal Disco parties, celebrating disco decadence in its myriad mutations, both classic and contemporary — only this time, they’ll be adding a mashup twist to their signature sound!

And for the Midnight Mashup Show, resident dance crew R.A.I.D. (Random Acts of Irreverent Dance) takes over the stage in all their bizarre, gold-suited glory, for another show-stopping dance performance.

Launched in 2003, Bootie was the first club night in the United States dedicated solely to the burgeoning artform of the bootleg mashup — and is now the biggest mashup event in the world, with monthly parties in six cities on two continents.

And free mashup CDs will be given away like candy!

dragstripp66finale

Gay, straight, bi, trans or in-between – Dragstrip 66 is your “all-invited” home to unleash all forms of self-expression, decadence, drag, and masquerade – with a totally fun, friendly, no-attitude crowd. The music is an eclectic mix of electro, indie rock, funk, mashups, 80’s, synthpop – anything and everything to get the dancefloor shakin’. Every Dragstrip has a theme as a touchstone to inspire your drag or mode of dress. However, drag is NEVER required, and there’s plenty of folks in totally casual street wear too. DRAGSTRIP 66 is a long-running queer dance club in Los Angeles. (Perhaps the longest running underground dance club in LA?) Co-created by Mr. Dan (aka hostess Gina Lotriman) and DJ Paul V., Dragstrip launched in January 1993, on the 2nd Saturday each month.

AND DON’T FORGET:
Cover is always only $5 if you arrive in full drag or cross-dress!

Not to sound too hayseed, but this album’s like beer. Sometimes you cry in it; sometime you raise your glass. The L.A. quintet with roots in Sun Valley, Idaho, have birthed a “No Depression”-worthy recording that, while hardly straying from country formula, tugs at your heart like a prairie sunset. The fivesome’s tidy arrangements help diminutive frontman David LaBrel’s crystalline vocals stand out — he doesn’t have to overplay wistful when he sings “It’s kinda hard to laugh right now / and drinkin’ makes me sick / ‘Cause the first time I saw you / I was in between sips.” – Buzz Bands

King Sunny Ade || Watch

There are a few different reasons why you should be excited about the just announced King Sunny Ade concert at the Echoplex on Friday, May 7, which Jason Bentley scooped and announced on Morning Becomes Eclectic this morning. First, if you’re a clumsy dancer and want to steal a few effervescent moves from a master of the understated maneuver, King Sunny is your man. He does these little half-steps and elbow buckles that are incredibly easy, efficient, and very suave — David Byrne owes the King some dance royalties, if there were such a thing.

Second, King Sunny Ade is, along with Fela Kuti, one of the first African artists to make a dent in the American market; in the late 1970s and early 1980s, King Sunny released a few brilliant albums on Island Records that showcased rhythmic “Juju Music,” a funky thing that was rising in Africa. The Nigerian master’s Juju Music stands today as one of the classics of the era, and sounds incredibly fresh nearly 30 years after its release. – LA Weekly

downandderbydec

The Swords of Fatima

The Swords of Fatima began in the blink of an eye following a bellydancing DVD overdose by the legendary Buko Pan Guerra (bass player of Lily and The Ladies and The Black Cat Mafia, banjo player from Shadow in the Nightshade and Les Confidentes). Buko is also known as the “Bad Ass Bitch with a Banjo” (coined by the amazing Sean Carnage). Buko also plays banjo inSun Trash!

Amazed by the astounding gyrations of the one and only Sonia and the incredible drumming of Issam Houshan, she began crafting the beginings of what would become the Flamenco Bollywood Disco Punk sound the band would cultivate into the madness it has become today.

Enlisting the help of Nickei Scott, the Bollywood name for Nicki from Popdefect / Project K / The Shards, the two gestated the band’s sound for a month before turning it loose on the world. With the help of legendary Silver Lake Scenester hater Scott Taylor, the Twopergroup has released it’s first CD: Two Days Two Swords Walk Alone At Midnight on the known universe, and given their stripped down equipment and without the hindrances of pesky lead singers and bass players to get in the way… there’s nothing in the world to stop them!

FLAVORS (Recapping The Music Of The 90’s Era…The Golden Years), is an event conceptualized by the innovative minds of KeiStar Productions. This show is one that all of us Dub Club selectors are really excited about. If you have ever come to the Dub Club over the past 9 years, chances are pretty good that you heard a Johnny Clarke tune being spun. “Rock With Me” , King of the Arena” , Rockers Time” , “Bloood Dunza” , the list of hits is endless. As they say on the excellent Johnny Clarke fan website http://raresounds.co.uk/: During the years 1975 – 1981, Bob Marley and the Wailers gained their huge international audience and three singers ruled the Jamaican Dancehall – Dennis Brown, Gregory Issacs and Johnny Clarke. Today, Johnny Clarke is still the least known internationally.
He is a giant in Jamaican Music and we are thrilled to finally have him at the Dub Club.

Check out the raresounds website listed above for more info about Johnny Clarke.

Watts Ensemble || Listen

Drummer Brian Watson supposedly launched the Watts Ensemble on a dare, waging whether he could not only write cohesive music for 10 or so players, but to also recruit and retain them. In a city as diverse as L.A., Watson knew they were out there, but the real challenge was where to find them. Months of Craigslist ads (seeking those mutually interested in Stravinsky, Devo and the Coltranes), friend-to-friend references and music store leads steadily built an amalgamated mutt of an outfit, but a smart and sassy one too, and tight as a drum – even though, at times, the Charles Mingus influence is overshadowing. Mostly it’s a blast to see and hear a live, knowledgeable ensemble like this on stage. At times the sounds are low – meandering flutes and winds, soothing-to-nonexistent strings, and just one waning refrain the only connection to the larger piece of work. Then, just like that, the bottom and bass rattle back in, motivated by Mingus’ Pithecanthropus Erectus stumble and inspired by the cinematic hues of Taxi Driver’s nighttime drives. – LA Weekly

We are happy to welcome back our resident skate guards, MIKE BEE & STEVE 1DER, to lace you with that crazy juice.

We also have a very special guest, a D&D veteran from the east coast, DJ Royale, from Philly. Now Im sure Royale is devestated by the Phillies lose so this is gonna be a good opportunity to put that lose, and the cold weather, behind him and backwards skate!!!

The Los Angeles event is set apart from Down and Derby parties in other cities by its authentic 70s feel. Seasons || Watch

Seasons have the dynamics of psychedelic rock without the grimy cloud of sonic smoke that makes all psych rock sound the same. (You don’t hear the psychedelic influence on the recordings as much as you do seeing them live.) The songwriting itself, conversely, can actually be pretty poppy at times. They have the intellectual curiosity, whimsy, and thoughtfulness of aughty indie rock in the vein of The Arcade Fire. The lead singer is animated but serious and emotional, and still intensely mysterious. There’s seven guys in the band, so the soundscape is crowded and you benefit most from their live set by shiting your ear’s perspective to individual members of the band, then back to the whole spectacular soup of sound. The mutual participation and equity between band members on stage is an enormous part of their identity.

I’ve seen them three times and never left feeling anything other than “Jesus. Whoa.” Their song “Empty Spaceships” liberates repressed feeling, and then leaves one with a an oppressive sense of comfort instead. – Classical Geek Theatre

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble are a family, literally. They are the heirs to the great musical tradition of Chicago. Their father Phil Cohran trained them from age three to play hard, fast and together. They boast a fan base as wide and eclectic as Barack Obama, David Byrne, Q-Tip, Jay-Z, Erykah Badu, Jools Holland and thousands more. Now with the news that they along with Mos Def and drummer extraordinaire Tony Allen will form the new Gorillaz outfit, you realize that this is no ordinary collective.

By the end of the nineties, with everyone out of school, they concentrated on their music full time. With a mix of their jazz roots and their hip-hop sensibility, they made a living for themselves on the streets of Chicago. While performing on a subway platform, they stumbled upon their name when a man who watched them for hours, missing train after train, proclaimed that he has been “hypnotized” by their music. With their composer skills aiding them to create a sound wholly their own, the group moved to New York City where they played with Mos Def and Erykah Badu.

From a chance encounter in November of 2005, and support from numerous artists, the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble has released an album brimming with musical magic. Recorded on the back of the Africa Express trip to Lagos last October, during a three-day stop-over in London, with the drummer’s stool shared by Malcolm Catto from the The Heliocentrics, Sola Akingbola from Jamiroquai, and the one and only Tony Allen, and other musical luminaries Flea and Paul Simenon, this album is all that is cracked up to be and more.

Trannyshack LA Oct 09

Halloween arrives early in Los Angeles! Trannyshack LA returns, this time at Echoplex, our new home, and our biggest and best venue yet. With a line-up of the most scarily talented trannies on the West Coast, this will be the party not to miss this Halloween season. Featuring performances by Kim Burly, Raya Light, Peggy L’eggs, Lady Bear, Syphilis Diller, Mercy Fuque, Ambrosia Salad, Fade Dra, Tammie Brown, Squeaky Blonde, and more. Hostess-or, Ghostess- Heklina keeps a tight rein on the chills and thrills, and DJ Dave Rape supplies the spine tingling beats before and after the show. Drop dead diva’s Barbie Q and Phyllis Navidad will greet you at the door….

Olin & The Moon || Watch

Three Idaho boys bring their rural charm to the Los Angeles scene with a little help from a pretty face along the way. Olin and the Moon’s self-titled album is a promising start for these old friends as they attempt to stand out from the crowd they’ve chosen to surround themselves with.

Drummer Marshall Vore allows the band to reside confidently in between the overtly fast and the unconsciously mellow, while singer David LaBrel shines with storytelling skills that stand up to the likes of Bright Eye’s Conor Oberst. Invoking images of a rock star retiring to the moon, “Moon Man” is like a monotone ballad version of “Ziggy Stardust.” In “Home,” the band conjures up fond memories of simple farm life protecting innocent love: “I wanna take you to the trees / Where the forest and the farm lands meet … Where you can lay out on the grass all day / Where it is safe.” Songs like these benefit from acoustic guitar strums, heavenly bells and sweet piano undertones.

Tracks like “Oh Bells” and “Song of the Summer” are focused more around the band’s own experiences on the road as musicians, referencing sound guys and getting drunk while singing. Olin and the Moon’s adolescent drive comes via David LaBrel’s brother Travis and his powerful lead guitar. His chord formations draw in ears to his trickling melodies — most notably on “Changin’“ and “Take It To Hell” — but they often overtake the songs, drowning out Erica Wheeler’s bass and David LaBrel’s vocals.

Olin and the Moon desperately strive to engage listeners in music that expresses their love for the art form; with an album like this, they just might succeed. – Performer Mag

MICHIGAN AND SMILEY
backed by the Kingston 13 band

Papa Michigan (born Anthony Fairclough) and General Smiley (born Erroll Bennett) were among the first dual-toasters on the Jamaican scene. Beginning in the late ’70s while still in school, the humorous duo (Smiley got his name because he never smiles) scored immediately with “Rub a Dub Style” and “Nice up the Dance,” two ubiquitous songs on the dancehall circuit. “One Love Jam Down” became a popular anthem, and 1982’s “Diseases” established them as major stars, especially at the annual Sunsplash festivals.

This month, Bootie LA is proud to present punk legends Howie Pyro and Jells Mayhem, a.k.a. The Illuminoids. This LA-based mashup production duo specializes in taking punk, electro, and indie songs and putting them in a sonic blender, producing tracks that veer sharply away from the typical pop and rap mashups of other DJs.

Also, back from Burning Man, it’s the return of San Francisco-based resident DJs Adrian & the Mysterious D, who will be joining DJ Paul V. on the decks. And for the Midnight Mashup Show, after taking a month off, resident dance crew R.A.I.D. (Random Acts of Irreverent Dance) is back with another gold-suited, choreographed, show-stopping performance!

Launched in 2003, Bootie was the first club night in the United States dedicated solely to the burgeoning artform of the bootleg mashup — and is now the biggest mashup event in the world, with monthly parties in eight cities on three continents. Mixing and matching every conceivable musical genre, era, and style into one big dance party where everyone feels welcome, Bootie provides the soundtrack for the A.D.D. generation — with free mashup CDs given away like candy!

Bootie’s resident DJs keep your brain guessing and body dancing with creative song combinations, celebrating — and satirizing — the many different forms of music. Bootie showcases the best in mashup productions from around the globe and delivers them on the dance floor … because one song at a time just isn’t enough!

Ranking Joe
Backed by Echodelic Soundsystem

So, Who Is Ranking Joe? Born Joseph Jackson, in Kingston, Jamaica , July 1, 1959, he was introduced in the music business at Tarrant Junior Secondary School in Kingston. Joe performed at school concerts and won local talent contest in the mid-70’s. At age 15, he went to the legendary “Studio One” to audition and what resulted was his first big hit “GUN COURT”, produced by Clement”Coxsone” Dodd under the name “Little Joe”.
“This recording lead to more producers becoming interested in My work and as a result I performed more records for different producers such as Bunny Lee,to name a few.” Some of these records are “OLD TRADITION” done by Bunny Lee, “HONDA 750″ done by Pete Weston. “PSALM 54″ and “JACKET” with Watty Burnett, “STOP YOUR COMING AND COME”, done by Sly and Robbie , “NATTY BMW” with Bunny Diamond, and “SHINE EYE GIRL” and “NATTY NEVER GET WEARY” done on Sonia Pottinger’s famous “HIGH NOTE” label. As he grew older, still into a young man, he changed his name on the advice of Prince Tony Robinson to “Ranking Joe”. Joe worked alongside Robinson and had hit records such as”A YOU Mr. FINNIGAN”,with an album of the same name. He was then was then introduced to the King of DJ’s “U-Roy”, after which he worked on U-Roy’s “KING STUR-GAV HI-FI”, the most popular sound system in Jamaica at that time.
“I later developed my original style of fast rapping. , tongue twisting and that became the most popular thing to hit the airways. The style was (Bang-didlly), also used by “Heavy D”, an American Rapper”. Joe’s string of successes kept rolling. “After an introduction to the producer Joe Gibbs,I did several singles for his label, such as”LEAVE FE ME Girl Arlene” and “Bald Head Bridge” done by the group “CULTURE” and Myself.” The latter was released as a disco 12″ 45 record-one of the wicked extended mixes of the “rockers” period of the late 70’s. “In 1977, I was voted the most popular DJ of that year, for my records that were on the charts and my performance of “KING STUR-GAV” sound system. In 1978-79 I was approached by “Henry ‘Junjo” laws for the “Volcano Label”, the top producer during that time. I recorded an album titled “Saturday Night Jamdown Style” , which was released by Greensleeves in France and VP Records in New York and as a result were successful”.
After moving to New York ,Joe released many records on his own label “Ranking Joe International” and continued to perform all over the world ,traveling to Israel, New Zealand and Brazil as well as Europe. He is one of the few DJs from his era who has continued to release strong new recordings, and has worked with many talented musicians. He was featured on the popular “Dub Side of the Moon” album by the Easy Star All Stars, as well as recordings by The Slackers and Mungo’s Hi-Fi.

Summer Darling || Listen || Watch

I went back inside and was simply floored by what I heard. Summer Darling were catching full steam and plowing through a hyper tense set of amazing music full of tension and emotion. To say I am not easily impressed would be an understatement, but I was enthralled with what I heard coming off the stage.

The double Fender guitar attack really let the intricate guitar interplay shine over a thumping but precise rhythm section. At times they conjured up images of early Fugazi. Maybe not so much in the actual songwriting style, but in the tome of the music. They were above all earnest in they intentions.

When next they play do yourself a favor and catch Summer Darling. I think you will pleased. – Radio Free Silver Lake

There’s an inescapably seductive quality to Angela Correa’s songs; despite the fact that every song she writes is downtempo and melancholy, she has produced forty-five minutes of mellowness rather than full sedation. Terrapin

The Terrapin was birthed out of a couple of bars in Long Beach, the failure of previous bands and chance. After Vanessa and Rufo ran into Alan at The Prospector in Long Beach, a jam session was scheduled. From that point until now The Terrapin has been keeping it real… real busy. The bands first show was in March 2007 at Que Sera as a trio. That continued until mutual friend Bill was brought into play saxophone. Yes, saxophone. Once they became aware that he could play keyboards and guitar, the sax got the ax. Now he is the proud mantle holder of bassist and has the position of first chair. This stroke of genius happened due to the fact that the original three members were sick of the Spinal Tap-like relationship they had with anyone else that tried to fill the spot..

Leslie & the Badgers are quietly turning into one of the city’s best quiet bands. There’s a gently glowing country-rock intimacy to the songs from their self-titled 2007 debut CD and 2008 iTunes EP, Greetings From Leslie & the Badgers, but they’re not some corny, cornpone revival outfit. Instead, tunes like “Old Timers” and “Air Force One” have intelligently heartfelt, evocative lyrics and are adorned with dreamy embellishments, such as Glenn Oyabe’s lap-steel guitar, which playfully quotes Santo & Johnny’s classic instrumental “Sleep Walk.” Singer-guitarist Leslie Stevens coos with a Neko Case–style passion on the relatively epic six-minute idyll “Black Rose Window,” where she declares, “Now the road is what takes you to brand-new places/and I’m taking myself and the radio station.” Such countrified ballads place them roughly in the same universe as fellow locals the Whispertown 2000, but the Badgers also reveal a jazzy side on “The Torture,” and they rock convincingly on uptempo barn-burners like “That’d Be Fine.” – LA Weekly

Many were taken aback when longtime Legendary Pink Dot Ryan Moore entered the yawning chasm of dub music. But they were far from disappointed with the results. Moore seized upon the analog implements of Caribbean technology and created mammoth, concave exercises in the echo chamber. His unique, thunderous sounds avoid the two fatal mistakes of contemporary dub practitioners-attempting to mimic King Tubby’s lo-fi aesthetic, and using racks of digital gear that result in dub “lite” (is there anything worse?). If you want your contacts blown out of your eyes, go straight to the “Lowell & Nine-Dub Plate.” It’s underground nuclear testing without the poison. – Tim Hasle (xlr8r.com)

downnderbyaug20

Down and Derby, the premier roller skating organization that has quickly garnered a loyal following in cities like Las Vegas, Pittsburgh and New York City will host its second Los Angeles event at The Echoplex, Thursday, July 30. Resident skate guard DJs Thee Mike B and Steve 1Der will control the roller disco rink’s turntables, broadcasting amplified sounds for the eight-wheeled revelers.

How ’bout filling your pipe with electro-tinged ho-made hillbilly music? The bass kicking comes in clear, but a clubby paradiddle irks alongside the slide guitar, as if a glowstick got dropped in a barrel o’ moonshine. A beer bottle precariously placed between a jostling knee cap and a tin gasoline can gets smacked by a drumstick thick as a chair leg and goes flying back at the wall. Smash. Hot bodies. Was that out loud? The contours of hot bodies. Ah, this thought has Tourette’s. You must get some very calloused hands from all that working out—I mean streamline pick-less strumming on a gee-tar. Equally intent on experimental beer spilling as percussionist J State, Troy Olaf Murrah slides a botttle up and down his fret board, twanging country roads home to gold-toothed crawdads. In a gruff froggy voice he announces they’re moving to Vancouver, going on hiatus, this will be the last show, which happens to be the (Sparks-sponsored—yay!) release party for Returns to the Tomb of Guiliano Medidici. It’s a joke. Maybe they’ll go to Vancouver, riding a wagon packed full of jangling license plates tied together with bra straps. – LA Record

RICHIE SPICE

Armed with just a microphone, one-drop rhythms and purifying lyrical flames, singer Richie Spice is the Gideon of contemporary reggae. The publicly declared “prince of fire” uses culturally uplifting, spiritually fortified words to defeat the negative content that informs much of popular (Jamaican) music. Fittingly, Gideon Boot is the title track of Spice’s brilliant fourth album. Recorded over the timeless Johnny Too Bad rhythm (taken from The Slickers 1970s hit of the same name, popularized in the film The Harder They Come) the song details Spice’s strategic plan for delivering his musical sermon to an awaiting global audience. “I need a Gideon boot and a khaki suit to stand out inna Babylon and defend the truth/ I got a strong reggae beat with a mic in my hand fe lead out de youth dem outta destruction and let de people know right from wrong.”

Just like the singer’s previous albums “Universal”, “Spice In Your Life” and “In The
Streets to Africa”, “Gideon Boot” contains inspiring messages specifically aimed at empowering vulnerable youth.

The traditional Rastafarian Nyabinghi drumming that dominates the opening cut “Babylon Falling” heralds the seriousness of Spice’s musical mission. “World Is A Cycle”, sung over producer Arif Cooper’s haunting “Guardian Angel” rhythm, is, as Spice explains, “a song for the children and for the parents saying be careful because what you do can fall right back on you and your kids.”

Also included is the current Jamaican hit “The Plane Land” which display’s Spice’s superb story telling skills. The song’s lyrics detail the frustration that oftentimes accompanies post 9/11travel. “Saddle up myself fe take interrogation…tek off mi shoes, tek off mi tam, if they ever find you with a spliff yu gone another land.” “It is a song everyone can relate to if they travel,” notes Spice, “and if they don’t travel, they will learn this is what we go through as entertainers as we go to other countries.”

Since 2004, when his apocalyptic single “Earth A Run Red” became the year’s most popular reggae song, Richie Spice has performed throughout the world, insuring that cultural roots reggae isn’t relegated to a bygone era but continues as a thriving, evolving musical genre.

Leslie & the Badgers || Watch

Pablo Moses || Watch

Pablo Moses, born in Jamaica as Pableto Henry, released his first album in 1975, Revolutionary Dream, issued in the United States by UA Records as, I love I Bring “ A university trained poet,” according to the Village Voices Carol Cooper, Moses articulated his Rastafarian ideology with unprecedented political frankness in a high pitched, horn-like voice over rhythms and harmonies laid down by keyboardist/ producer Geoffrey Chung. Signing with Mango Records, Moses collaborated with Chung five years later to produce his follow up, 1980’s A Song, a subtle answer to the fire of his debut release. In 1981, Pablo Moses issued his third album, entitled Pave The Way.

Tunes such as “I Man a Grasshopper” , “Dubbing is a Must” , and many others became reggae classics.
By then, Moses had amassed a strong following in Jamaica, Europe, North America and Japan. Moses’ Rastafarian themes, the crusade against injustice, inequality, greed, racism, war, and the pillage of nature were and are universal in their scope.

In 1983, Moses signed with Alligator Records to release In The Future. amplifying his political and social message with rock stylistics and the use of electronic instrumentation like the synthesizer and vocader. Moses expanded and deepened his sound and rhetoric with 1985’s Tension and 1987’s Live to Love. We Refuse, released in 1990, was a lyrical response to the political climate of the eighty’s seen as “good times”: by those who’ve closed their eyes to the underlying realities of poverty and racism, now unraveling in the ’90s. “In this album” says Moses,” I say what I ‘ve said all along, only in a modified mood, more straightforward. I refuse the Babylonian ways of society, the bully-istic attitudes. Jah made everyone with different cultures and colors just as he made different types of birds and plants for beautification.”

To this date, Pablo Moses remains one of the most original, out- spoken roots reggae artists to be found. After more than 30 years, he is still throwing out lyrics that are sociologically, political and culturally connected. Pablo Moses has toured extensively in Canada, U.S.A. South America, Central America, Europe, Scandinavia and the Caribbean. Pablo is currently almost finished with a brand new, highly anticipated upcoming album. Pablo Moses is a teacher, father and a revolutionary who has never, and will never, strayed from his path as a spokesman for the poor, oppressed and underprivileged people in the world.

thegrowlers

The Growlers || Listen || Watch

The Growlers play party music that’s shot through with an undertone of melancholy. It’s as if their sepia-tinted rock songs come equipped with both the drunken cheeriness and the nauseating hangover.

They know how to rollick like champs, but they can also creep along with a vaguely Eastern European worldweariness that’s endearing. They may claim Ol’ Dirty Bastard and Lee “Scratch” Perry as influences on their MySpace page (wigga, please), but the Growlers actually sound more like Man Man if they were fixated on pre-psych rock that’s too sophisticated to be considered “garage.” This nebulous quality makes the Growlers one of the most interesting bands working in the region.

The Growlers sent us a CD called The Greatest Hits, but at 25 tracks and 78 minutes, it sounds more like an archival clearinghouse of ideas. Most of these songs exude a casual, understated cool, marked by winding, mesmerizing, spangly guitars and Brooks Nielsen’s riveting, woebegone vocals. Even 38-second scraps such as “My Forehead’s Dripping Ocean” bear close listening.

They’re not very blues-rooted, but they do project an un-hokey sadness that consoles rather than brings you down (could be the band’s recessive folk genes). As I wrote in my live review on our Heard Mentality blog, “Their music possesses an insidious infectiousness that sneaks up on you like inebriation after a few sweet libations” (see “The Wildbirds and the Growlers, Detroit Bar,” Aug. 7, 2007). I bet you become besotted, too – OC Weekly

Bootie’s resident DJs keep your brain guessing and body dancing with creative song combinations, celebrating — and satirizing — the many different forms of music. Resident dance crew R.A.I.D. (Random Acts of Irreverent Dance) performs a mashed-up dance number nearly every month. Bootie showcases the best in mashup productions from around the globe and delivers them on the dance floor … because one song at a time just isn’t enough!

The Mighty Diamonds

The Mighty Diamonds, Donald “Tabby” Shaw, Fitzroy ”Bunny” Simpson and Lloyd “ Judge” Ferguson formed in 1969 in the Trenchtown area of Kingston, Jamaica and for the past 39 years have been entertaining and educating the world with their sweet harmonies and conscious lyrics.

They quickly became known as the young group with the Motown sound with their soulful harmonies and polished performances. They first hit singles “ Country Living” and “ Hey Girl” were recorded on the Channel One label. Their debut album “ Right Time”, released on the Virgin has become a classic. This is an album that belongs in every serious reggae collection. “ Right Time’ is probably their most requested song when they perform.

“ Pass the Kouchie” also became an international hit when first released and then again when it was covered by the “ Musical Youth” and released as “Pass the Dutchie”

Tabby, Bunny and Judge have produced over 45 albums in their long career and it would be hard to select just one album as a favorite but if I were asked to pick the definite Mighty Diamonds album I would have to say “ Deeper Roots”. This album proves that the Mighty Diamonds are truly the best in the business.

buzzbands-june15final1

About nine months ago, to no fanfare whatsoever, I used my laptop and some change rescued from under the seats of my car to launch BuzzBands.LA, a blog that, in a manner, continued the column I did for the Los Angeles Times for seven years. I’ve been flattered by the attention and support BuzzBands.LA has received, and on Monday, June 15, I’d like to celebrate a little. Please join me for four great bands and an equally great DJ at the Echoplex for a free night of music. Doors at 8:30, enter on Sunset — get there early for some surprises.

But in a weird way, when there’s just three people playing — even though the songs are out there — everything just sounds more simple. “Before we were like an aircraft carrier. BOOTIE LA 4-YEAR ANNIVERSARY PARTY

At 11 PM — From San Francisco, the world’s first mashup rock band:
sud_scream
SMASH-UP DERBY

Resident Bootie DJs:
ADRIAN & the MYSTERIOUS D
DJ PAUL V.

Bootie LA’s resident dance crew:
R.A.I.D. (Random Acts of Irreverent Dance)

Free 20-track Bootie Anniversary CDs for the first 300 people!

Dress like a pirate!

This month, Bootie celebrates four years of mashing it up, LA-style! Since launching at The Echo back in 2005, Bootie has grown quite a bit, becoming the epicenter for mashups in Southern California. To mark it’s 4-Year Anniversary, Bootie is proud to bring back Smash-Up Derby, the house band at Bootie SF, and the world’s first mashup rock band. They’re back from doing several gigs in Beijing, China, and they’ll be hitting the stage with their own rockin’ brand of live mashups at 11 PM . Also performing will be Bootie LA’s resident dance crew R.A.I.D. (Random Acts of Irreverent Dance) and of course, your resident DJs, Adrian & the Mysterious D and Paul V. It’s an anniversary party, so dress up like a pirate! We’ve also got special 20-track Bootie LA Anniversary CDs for the first 300 people, featuring tracks from every guest DJ we’ve featured over the past year!

Launched in 2003, Bootie was the first club night in the United States dedicated solely to the burgeoning artform of the bootleg mashup — and is now the biggest mashup event in the world, with monthly parties in seven cities on three continents. Mixing and matching every conceivable musical genre, era, and style into one big dance party where everyone feels welcome, Bootie provides the soundtrack for the A.D.D. generation — with free mashup CDs given away like candy!

Resident DJs Adrian, Mysterious D, and Paul V. keep your brain guessing and body dancing with creative song combinations, celebrating — and satirizing — the many different forms of music. Resident dance crew R.A.I.D. (Random Acts of Irreverent Dance) performs a mashed-up dance number nearly every month. Bootie showcases the best in mashup productions from around the globe and delivers them on the dance floor … because one song at a time just isn’t enough!
