BOOTIE LA
LA’s bimonthly mashup bootleg dance party
11 PM — Live on stage:
TRANZKONTINENTAL
LA’s live glam-rock drag mashup revue
Resident Bootie DJ:
DJ PAUL V.
Resident dance crew:
R.A.I.D. (Random Acts of Irreverent Dance)
Live on stage at 11 PM — and making their Bootie LA debut — are hot new LA band Tranzkontinental. Featuring Xander Smith and Charlie Paulson (original members of the Club Makeup band) along with LA drag superstars Momma and Kelly Mantle, the band was conceptualized with Dragstrip 66 & Bootie LA’s own DJ Paul V. The group came together with a singular goal in mind: to bring some sexy glam, glitz, and gender-bent sleaze back to the Sunset Strip, where they’ve been wowing crowds with a monthly residency at The Roxy. With a rotating cast of fierce queens on the mic, the band rips through classic rock ‘n’ roll jams — and new electropop hits — and mashes them all together, such as Lady Gaga vs. Metallica, and AC/DC vs. Peaches.
DJ Paul V. will also be on the decks throughout the night, spinning all the mashups you love, while resident dance crew R.A.I.D. (Random Acts of Irreverent Dance) will provide the on-stage eye-candy with their trademark gold suits and fierce go-go dancing.
Launched in 2003 by DJs Adrian & Mysterious D, Bootie was the first club night in the United States dedicated solely to the burgeoning artform of the bootleg mashup — and is now the biggest mashup event in the world, with regular parties in several cities on four continents. Mixing and matching every conceivable musical genre, era, and style into one big dance party where everyone feels welcome, Bootie’s DJs keep your brain guessing and body dancing with creative song combinations, celebrating — and satirizing — the many different forms of music. Bootie provides the soundtrack for the A.D.D. generation, with free mashup CDs given away like candy!

Resident dance crew:
R.A.I.D. (Random Acts of Irreverent Dance)
Vinyl turntables and CD DJ decks are soooooo 20th century! Which is why Bootie LA is presenting the latest way to DJ — with Apple iPads! Known for always pushing the latest technology in his sets, DJ Tripp was one of the first to embrace this new, cutting-edge way to DJ. For this special guest set, he’ll be utilizing the multi-touch displays on a pair of iPads to control, manipulate, and play mashups!
Resident DJ Paul V. will also be on the decks, spinning all your favorite (and soon-to-be favorite mashups) while resident dance crew R.A.I.D. (Random Acts of Irreverent Dance) provides the on-stage eye-candy with their trademark gold suits and fierce go-go dancing.

Saturday 08.28.10: LIT CRAWL II @ echo
Posted by damara - filed in 21+, echo, events, free show
Lit Crawl is an event dedicated to good literature, community and responsible intoxication. The evening begins with author readings and afterwards moves out to occupy neighborhood bars in an orderly/disorderly fashion. Lit Crawls have existed in one form or another since civilization began and are seeing a resurgence throughout the literate world. LitQuake is putting on great crawls in San Francisco and New York.
On August 28th, Lit Crawl 2 starts at the Echo with a good ole fashioned, ‘no holds barred’ read off*. Eleven authors will compete and the audience will decide the winner. After the main event crawlers will set out to El Prado, The Gold Room, The Little Joy and The Shortstop.
Start following PEN’s twitter to receive live Crawl updates – after the first bar you’ll need ‘em.
If you need a break from crawling or feel inspired to perform your own verse Stories Bookshop will be hosting an open mic.
Our MC’s will be Laurie Ochoa and Joe Donnelly editors of Slake Literary Journal + the lovely and talented Carolyn Kellogg of the Los Angeles Times
Our Authors:
Katie Arnoldi
Allison Burnett
Gabrielle Calvocoressi
Dennis Danziger
Samantha Dunn
James Greer
Edan Lepucki
Joseph Mattson
Graham Moore
Neal Pollack

Vanaprasta || Listen || Watch
L.A. quintet Vanaprasta has come a long way since they got inside my head with their nifty guitar work last March. Not so far that they have an album out yet — that’ll happen when “Heathy Geometry” is released later this year — but far enough that their dramatic blend of churning rhythms, bright riffage and glowing imagery sounds ready for big stages. The band — Collin Desha, Steven Wilkin, Taylor Brown, Cameron Dmytryk and Ben Smiley — traveled to Portland late last year to record, and the initial results of those sessions, the “Forming the Shapes” EP, will be out next month. Vanaprasta will also contribute a cover of LCD Soundsystem’s “All My Friends” to a forthcoming L.A. charity compilation, “Uncovering a Cure.” On the EP version of their album’s title song, Vanaprasta takes some liberties with the word “geometry,” but their math works for me.- Buzz Bands
While some things change — as in, say, a band’s name switching from Aushua to Pacific Hurt — some things remain very much the same. Their moniker may have morphed, but Pacific Hurt’s sound still hues closely to the sweeping and sleek intricate rockers that made their Limbo disc the best local EP of last year. – Web In Front

LA’s bimonthly mashup bootleg dance party
Special guest DJ from Brazil, Bootie Rio’s:
FAROFF
Resident Bootie DJ:
DJ PAUL V.
Resident dance crew:
R.A.I.D. (Random Acts of Irreverent Dance)
From Brazil — and fresh from his recent appearance at Bootie Berlin — Bootie LA presents the return of Bootie Rio’s DJ Faroff. As Bootie’s diplomat to Brazil and one of Bootie Boston’s former DJs, Faroff gets around, spreading the mashup love with his many popular bootlegs and crowd-pleasing DJ sets.
Resident DJ Paul V. will also be on the decks, spinning a bunch of hot summertime mashup jams to get you dancin’, while resident dance crew R.A.I.D. (Random Acts of Irreverent Dance) provides the on-stage eye-candy with their trademark gold suits and fierce go-go dancing.
Launched in 2003 by DJs Adrian & Mysterious D, Bootie was the first club night in the United States dedicated solely to the burgeoning artform of the bootleg mashup – and is now the biggest mashup event in the world, with regular parties in several cities on four continents. Mixing and matching every conceivable musical genre, era, and style into one big dance party where everyone feels welcome, Bootie’s DJs keep your brain guessing and body dancing with creative song combinations, celebrating – and satirizing – the many different forms of music. Bootie provides the soundtrack for the A.D.D. generation, with free mashup CDs given away like candy!

“John Shade moves with composure and ease through arch, almost dour indie pop (”The Believers”) as well as joyous dollops of Of Montreal-inspired electro pop. The sexily deadpan “Cable TV” brings all the moods together, celebrating the joys of cheap motel rooms and Janet Jackson songs with boop-beeps, handclaps, and a wry smile.” – Spin Magazine
“In the spirit of I’m From Barcelona, Loney Dear or Boy Least Likely To, Fol Chen employs all my favorite electro-fey devices: cheesy ’80s keys, propulsive beats, sporadic strummy guitars that bounce between channels and, of course, xylophone. DJ PAUL V.
Resident dance crew:

Bootie LA presents the return of LA’s own DJ Shyboy, whose specialty is mixing and mashing multiple genres, from rock to electronica, hip-hop to folk, and everything in-between. His adventurous sense of style has led him to work as a remixer for artists such as Beyoncé, Whitney Houston, Craig David, and Donna Summer.
Bootie LA’s resident DJ Paul V. holds it down on the decks, spinning all your favorite (and soon-to-be favorite) mashups throughout the night, while resident dance crew R.A.I.D. (Random Acts of Irreverent Dance) will be working the Echoplex stage with their trademark gold-suits and go-go dance moves.

BOOTIE LA
LA’s bimonthly mashup bootleg dance party
4th of July Weekend Party!
Special guest:
DJ AXEL
Resident Bootie DJ:
DJ PAUL V.
Resident dance crew:
R.A.I.D. (Random Acts of Irreverent Dance)
For its special 4th of July Weekend Party, Bootie LA presents the return of DJ Axel. While playing with live breakbeat and drum & bass bands in London and San Francisco, Axel picked up the art of DJing, and after moving to Los Angeles, released a 15-track mashup album called “Breakin’ The Law.” The album is available in over 100 stores and recently went “street platinum,” defined by Billboard as sales of over 10,000 units of an unlicensed mixtape. Axel’s original songs and remixes have appeared in films and soundtracks such as “17 Again” and “Two Lovers.”
Launched in 2003, Bootie was the first club night in the United States dedicated solely to the burgeoning artform of the bootleg mashup – and is now the biggest mashup event in the world, with regular parties in several cities on four continents. Mixing and matching every conceivable musical genre, era, and style into one big dance party where everyone feels welcome, Bootie’s DJs keep your brain guessing and body dancing with creative song combinations, celebrating – and satirizing – the many different forms of music. Bootie provides the soundtrack for the A.D.D. generation, with free mashup CDs will be given away like candy!

Thursday 07.22.10: DOWN AND DERBY ROLLER DISCO @ echoplex
Posted by damara - filed in 21+, Dance Night, echoplex, events
The Los Angeles event is set apart from Down and Derby parties in other cities by its authentic 70s feel. The resident DJs don’t just spin popular tunes for which the era has become known—they reach into the depths of 70s music to bring partiers the obscure hits that may not be recognizable by most, but are truly indicative of the culture and lifestyle of the era.
Down and Derby, is a retro-inspired roller-skating party created and designed to give attendees a unique nightlife experience. The interactive throwback events combine décor reminiscent of a 70s roller disco with attendees participating through wearing fashion attire evocative of the era. DJs known for pushing the limits of mixing and music production are procured, adding vibrant energy to the event with both underground and popular mixes.
The entry fee is $5 with RSVP, $10 at the door and quad skates of every size will be available to rent for another $5. Guests are welcome to bring their own roller skates to the event.

From Bootie San Francisco, DJ team:
THE FACE MELTERS:
FOX
KOOL KARLO
Resident Bootie DJ:
DJ PAUL V.
Resident dance crew:
R.A.I.D. (Random Acts of Irreverent Dance)
Coming down from Bootie San Francisco, Bootie LA presents the mashup DJ duo known as The Face Melters — a.k.a. Fox and Kool Karlo. These two like-minded DJs realized they had similar styles after spinning in the same clubs for years, and their recent collaboration as the Face Melters has yielded an electrifying mix of hip-hop, house, electro, and funk. Using four turntables, they mash all of these styles together to create dance floor bliss for party-goers worldwide.
Resident DJ Paul V. also holds it down on the decks, spinning all your favorite (and soon-to-be favorite) mashups throughout the night, while resident dance crew R.A.I.D. (Random Acts of Irreverent Dance) takes over Echoplex the stage with their trademark gold-suited go-go action!
Launched in 2003, Bootie was the first club night in the United States dedicated solely to the burgeoning artform of the bootleg mashup – and is now the biggest mashup event in the world, with regular parties in several cities on four continents. Sister Nancy is a favorite at the Dub Club and always brings the fire when she comes through. Her tune “Bam Bam” is loved by fans of all genres of music worldwide…but there’s nothing like hearing the original female dj live and direct on the mic…
General Trees will be making his first stop at the Dub Club and we can’t wait to hear his gravel voice booming out over our PA. Trees had many Jamaican hits in the 80s and he is known for his great live performances and his arsenal of lyrics…
Tippa Lee started in the music business toasting on his fathers sound system age 8 , “standing up on a beer bottle box to reach the mic”. He made his first recording at King Tubbys studio at age 12 , and later had a Jamaican No 1 hit with ‘No Trouble We” in the 80s.
And….surprise guests! Over the years at Dub Club surprise guests have included many heavy hitters , so you never know….
And as usual with Sound System style shows at the Dub Club , all the performers will be backed up by the Echodelic selectors on the turntables…

“Timezone” – psychedelic global music mashup
Briggy blows the roof off the Dub Club every time he passes through. His microphone mastery and lyrical versatility are unparalleled. Don’t miss this appearance from a true sound system legend!
More influential through his live performances than his scant recordings, Brigadier Jerry was one of Jamaica’s top DJs at the dawn of the dancehall era. A brilliant lyrical improviser, Briggy — as he was affectionately known — elevated the standards for speed and fluidity in DJ chatting technique, laying the groundwork for much of what followed. Despite early dancehall’s taste for slackness, Jerry’s subject matter was almost always spiritual and cultural, though he did have a sense of humor and was an excellent battle DJ. Brigadier Jerry was born Robert Russell in Kingston on September 28, 1957. He started his career in show business by trying standup comedy in his early teens, but soon moved on to work for sound systems. He started out at the legendary U-Roy’s King SturGav Hi-Fi system in the early ’70s, and soon moved on to the Jah Love Muzik system; this latter was run by the Rastafarian sect to which he belonged, the Twelve Tribes of Israel. While with Jah Love, bootleg cassette tapes of his live performances began to circulate among DJ aficionados, resulting in packed houses wherever he played. Despite his sterling underground reputation and influential, melodic toasting style, Jerry was barely represented on record until 1982. He’d previously cut several tracks for Studio One, including “Every Man Me Brethren” and “Dance in Montreal,” and appeared on several local singles with other Twelve Tribes members. In 1982, he cut a new version of the Slim Smith riddim “Never Let Go,” which he retitled “Pain” and released on the small Jywanza label. It was a major hit, rocketing to the top of the Jamaican charts. Meanwhile, he also mentored the career of female DJ Sister Carol, and DJed for nearly every prominent sound system in Jamaica. A semi-official live album, Live at the Controls, appeared in 1983, but he didn’t record his proper debut LP until 1985. Called Jamaica Jamaica, it was the closest he came to capturing the excitement of his live gigs in the studio. Several more singles followed over the rest of the ’80s, but Jerry remained a live DJ at heart. He relocated to New York on a permanent basis in 1988, and put together a second album with 1990′s On the Road. In 1992, Jerry recorded his third proper album, Hail Him, for Tapper Zukie’s label. Another album, Freedom Street, appeared on the VP label in 1995. When U-Roy reactivated his King SturGav Hi-Fi sound system, Jerry joined up as a regular. Today, Briggy still travels to Europe and Japan touring. He recently released his fifth album entitled, “Showers of Blessings” on the Virtuous Woman label .

Their arsenal of exclusive dubplates are legendary, as are their live sound clashes. This event however is not a clash in the proper sense, but a night of pure musical madness with the 2 DJs trading sets back and forth and vibing up the dance til the roof comes off the place! Buyepongo is one of LAs finest young bands representing the Cumbia and Vallento styles. We have been wanting to have them at the Dub Club for a while now and we know it will be a long hot night in the Echo!

:: SO WHY DO SPUNK ON GAY PRIDE WEEKEND? ::
Because so many of the alternative gay community do not feel connected to - nor interested in - what’s offered at the Weho Pride festival. From the hideous circuit music tent, to the warm beer in cups, to the generally bland live entertainment – there’s plenty of indie gays who just totally stay away. So SPUNK is just the fix for something different!
SPUNK is a gay event, but also welcomes women & friendly heteros, too.

Real-life married couple and make-believe werewolf shop-crashers Tiffany and Daniel Preston, who comprise Rainbow Arabia, are based in LA, but their music spans the spooky expanses of this over-warmed ozone-choked globe. Most prominently, Tiffany’s vocal lines tend to come oil-drenched and wailing from the Middle East, while the percussion and other tidbits of electronic mayhem rounding out the soundfield are a dark (but undeniably bouncy) who’s who of global fusion motifs.
On their second mini-album Kabukimono, the duo turn in only five new songs and a Ghosts On Tape Remix of the riotous Omar K (that of the bizarre music video) from their first EP, 2008′s The Basta. The whole thing clocks in at just over 21 minutes, but this isn’t really something to complain about. If anything, Rainbow Arabia avoid the all too enticing allure of settling into a groove and flogging it to the ground while the dancers pant from exhaustion. – MusicOMH

If anything, Rainbow Arabia avoid the all too enticing allure of settling into a groove and flogging it to the ground while the dancers pant from exhaustion. – MusicOMH

Thursday 05.20.10: DOWN AND DERBY ROLLER DISCO @ echoplex

Monday 05.31.10: Monday Night Residency – THE LIKE / THE YOUNG VEINS / THE LIVING SICKNESS @ echo
Posted by damara - filed in 21+, echo, events, free show
Formed in 2001 during their formative mid-teen years, Los Angeles’ The Like have transformed from indie-alt rock kids to a polished troupe of young ladies who create nouveau retro pop-rock with a sassy twist. Rooted in the era of early 60s British pop girl groups, this foursome have a sleek and signature sound that caught the attention of Mark Ronson (he’s producing their new album, due out in June) and The Arctic Monkeys, with whom they recently joined on tour.
Paired up with Zac Posen for the launch of his new line at Target last night, The Like performed a full set for early shoppers and fans. One thing we noticed about their performance, and that we loved to the max…the band goes straight from one song into the next. No banter in between and as the last chord of one song hits, the drum beat of the next one begins. Stylish and seamless!
We can’t wait to hear the album, especially Wishing He Was Dead, which quickly became our favorite song by the girls. It’s got a Doors’ organ vibe meshed with the soulful nature of The Shirelles. – Sheena Beaston

Music doesn’t feel so much like a business to Evan Slamka these days, and the Los Angeles singer-songwriter likes it just fine.
With his new quintet Square on Square, Slamka has emerged from three-plus years of personal reflection and creative regeneration that followed the dissolution of Majorie Fair, which released one excellent album (”Self Help Serenade”) for Capitol Records before sinking into the major-label abyss. The music on SOS’s forthcoming five-song EP, “Spectrum of Love,” brims with the same keen melodicism and British Invasion shading as Slamka’s previous work, except now everything — from arrangements to themes — seems larger than life. – Buzz Bands LA

Wednesday 05.12.10: DUB CLUB presents THE MELODIANS / FRANKIE PAUL / YELLOW WALL DUB SQUAD @ echoplex
Posted by damara - filed in 21+, Dance Night, echoplex, events
Dub Club is sorry to announce that Johnny Osbourne will not be performing at the show this wednesday May 12 at the Echoplex. Although we try to be 100% reliable and avoid the “reggae cancellation syndrome” , sometimes it is just out of our control. Sorry again to all who were looking forward to Johnny Osbourne.
HOWEVER…. we still have a great show for you with THE MELODIANS and new addition to the lineup FRANKIE PAUL.
with THE MELODIANS
And FRANKIE PAUL
both backed by Yellow Wall Dub Squad
The Melodians are one of the most beloved groups from the 60s era of reggae. Their song “Rivers Of Babylon” was featured in the film “The Harder They Come” , and is considered a reggae anthem. Their many other hits such as “Sweet Sensation” , “Everybody Bawling” , “Come On Little Girl” and many more, epitomise the classic vocal harmony sound of the rocksteady style, which has never stopped pleasing generations of fans around the world.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iWLTBP3B1m0&feature=related
Frankie Paul is a legendary dancehall singer and dynamic live performer with hits like “Worries in the Dance” , “Pass The Tu Shung Peng” , and many others. There is also a high probability that there will be surprise guest performers as well. Check out Frankie Paul : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ZFCxtq7Lqo
Both artists will be backed by the excellent Yellow Wall Dub Squad band, a group of Jamaican musicians now based out of Oakland. There will be a additional horn section brought in just for the Dub Club show.
At the mixing board for this show will be the dubmaster Scientist. Scientist learned his way around the studio from King Tubby , the father of dub music, and has built his own legacy of classic dub albums. Many of the cuts on Scientists dub albums were Johnny Osbourne songs in their original vocal incarnations , so it makes sense to have him at the controls for this show!

Tuesday 04.06.10: SARA MELSON / MODERN TIME MACHINES / ANDREW LYNCH / BUTTERFLY CHILD @ echo
Posted by damara - filed in 21+, echo, events, free show
Crafting mordant pop songs in the vein of Randy Newman, Josh Ritter or Jeff Tweedy, Lynch consistently hides fractured characters, twisted narratives, and bittersweet love stories beneath cryptic metaphors and shimmering production. “My Head Around”, an orchestral, mid-tempo rocker moves along so smoothly that it takes the whole song to realize the narrator is not smitten by love but beaten down and blind sided, his head turned backwards to the mistake he is about to make. “This Bird” layers a tale of a man imprisoned who can’t fight his murderous tendencies over catchy, jangly, piano and staccato strings. “The Thrill Is Gone” paints a portrait of a relationship gone sour and the vices we use to hide the truth from ourselves and fool ourselves into staying against a bombastic musical backdrop featuring downbeat guitar and grandiloquent horns and bells.
Sun Incisions is a wonderful album that will reveal more and more upon every listen. Lynch uses unique perspectives and unreliable narrators to create a bittersweet world of insecurities and foibles that seems sentimental, comical, twisted and relatable at the same time. – Radio Free Silverlake
