Friday 11.05.10: YELLE @ echoplex

Posted by damara - filed in 18+, Dance Night, echoplex, events

YELLE || LISTEN || WATCH

Despite finding fame with the very public ridiculing of a fellow musician’s manhood (MySpace hit “Short Dick Cuizi,” which cut Parisian rapper Cuizinier down to size), Yelle’s all about relentless Euro-electro charm. The dance world’s been thoroughly seduced by French acts of late (Daft Punk, Justice et al.), and here comes another one. Almost defiantly singing in her native tongue only ups Yelle’s coy joy as she wraps genuine melodies and nursery-rhyme refrains around squelchy/fuzzy Radio Shack synths and migraine-inducing megakicks. “Je Veux Te Voir” (the finalized version of “Short Dick Cuizi”) bounces all over Toni Basil’s “Mickey” with help from Human League, Ace of Base and flurried déjà views of Neneh Cherry’s “Buffalo Stance,” while “A Cause des Garçons” could be the analog-driven incidental music from some early-’80s movie, weaving fake-for-fake’s-sake beat-box cascades around textured stop/start science-project stabs. Yelle’s performance at the Music Box in November had even the bar-hugging +1 posers moving — you’re next. – LA Weekly

Saturday 09.18.10: BOOTIE LA with TRANZKONTINENTAL / DJ PAUL V. / R.A.I.D. @ echoplex

BOOTIE LA
LA’s bimonthly mashup bootleg dance party

11 PM — Live on stage:
TRANZKONTINENTAL
LA’s live glam-rock drag mashup revue

Resident Bootie DJ:
DJ PAUL V.

Resident dance crew:
R.A.I.D. (Random Acts of Irreverent Dance)

Live on stage at 11 PM — and making their Bootie LA debut — are hot new LA band Tranzkontinental. Featuring Xander Smith and Charlie Paulson (original members of the Club Makeup band) along with LA drag superstars Momma and Kelly Mantle, the band was conceptualized with Dragstrip 66 & Bootie LA’s own DJ Paul V. The group came together with a singular goal in mind: to bring some sexy glam, glitz, and gender-bent sleaze back to the Sunset Strip, where they’ve been wowing crowds with a monthly residency at The Roxy. With a rotating cast of fierce queens on the mic, the band rips through classic rock ‘n’ roll jams — and new electropop hits — and mashes them all together, such as Lady Gaga vs. Metallica, and AC/DC vs. Peaches.

DJ Paul V. will also be on the decks throughout the night, spinning all the mashups you love, while resident dance crew R.A.I.D. (Random Acts of Irreverent Dance) will provide the on-stage eye-candy with their trademark gold suits and fierce go-go dancing.

Launched in 2003 by DJs Adrian & Mysterious D, Bootie was the first club night in the United States dedicated solely to the burgeoning artform of the bootleg mashup — and is now the biggest mashup event in the world, with regular parties in several cities on four continents. Mixing and matching every conceivable musical genre, era, and style into one big dance party where everyone feels welcome, Bootie’s DJs keep your brain guessing and body dancing with creative song combinations, celebrating — and satirizing — the many different forms of music. Bootie provides the soundtrack for the A.D.D. generation, with free mashup CDs given away like candy!

From special guest:

Resident dance crew:
R.A.I.D. (Random Acts of Irreverent Dance)

Vinyl turntables and CD DJ decks are soooooo 20th century! Which is why Bootie LA is presenting the latest way to DJ — with Apple iPads! Known for always pushing the latest technology in his sets, DJ Tripp was one of the first to embrace this new, cutting-edge way to DJ. For this special guest set, he’ll be utilizing the multi-touch displays on a pair of iPads to control, manipulate, and play mashups!

Resident DJ Paul V. will also be on the decks, spinning all your favorite (and soon-to-be favorite mashups) while resident dance crew R.A.I.D. (Random Acts of Irreverent Dance) provides the on-stage eye-candy with their trademark gold suits and fierce go-go dancing.

MISHKAFINAL-forreal

Los Angeles, we’re to announce our Fall 2010 release party on Friday, August 20th at The Echoplex. Our LA store opening party was such a blast we decided to do it all over again with another huge bash for all of our left coast family and fans. As with the last party it’s free if you RSVP in advance and only a measly $5 if you don’t.

We’ve booked an incredible line-up for the event featuring performances by Pictureplane, Blessure Grave, Puro Instinct (formerly Pearl Harbor) and Tearist. And if that wasn’t enough there’s going to be some balls to the wall DJ sets from Acid Girls, The Captain and Star Eyes (of Trouble & Bass) and Killing Spree (Zane & Gibby). I can assure you it’s going to be on hell of a night!

Proximal Records release party for “Proximity One: Narrative of a City”

Anyone holding onto the notion that the L.A. beat scene is a lil’ hometown secret probably also thinks sailboarding with baby is a good idea.

So before you go and cry foul that a greenhorn indie label, Proximal Records, has announced its arrival with a compilation celebrating the local scene, listen to the actual product, and be thankful that it’s local folk who are tending this latest flame.

On August 10, Proximal will release Proximity One: Narrative of a City, an 18-track collection of music from Low End Theory-familiar beat musicians like Dâm-Funk, Daedelus, Baths (as [Post-Foetus]), Shlohmo, Tokimonsta, Dr. Strangeloop and Teebs, alongside tracks from Proximal’s own promising stable: BearClaw, Benedek and Wake among others.

Also included in that lineup is Sahy Uhns, a.k.a. Carl Madison Burgin, who co-founded Proximal with Grammy-winning composer/producer Jeff Elmassian. (Bonus trivia: Elmassian made his orchestral debut with the L.A. Phil at the age of 12.)

Also, mark your calendars: The release party for Proximity One goes down August 5 at The Echo, featuring Daedelus, Tokimonsta, Lawrence Grey, Benedek and Say Uhns himself. – LA Weekly

BOOTIE LA
LA’s bimonthly mashup bootleg dance party

4th of July Weekend Party!

Special guest:
DJ AXEL

Resident Bootie DJ:
DJ PAUL V.

Resident dance crew:
R.A.I.D. (Random Acts of Irreverent Dance)

For its special 4th of July Weekend Party, Bootie LA presents the return of DJ Axel. While playing with live breakbeat and drum & bass bands in London and San Francisco, Axel picked up the art of DJing, and after moving to Los Angeles, released a 15-track mashup album called “Breakin’ The Law.” The album is available in over 100 stores and recently went “street platinum,” defined by Billboard as sales of over 10,000 units of an unlicensed mixtape. Axel’s original songs and remixes have appeared in films and soundtracks such as “17 Again” and “Two Lovers.”

Bootie LA’s resident DJ Paul V. holds it down on the decks, spinning all your favorite (and soon-to-be favorite) mashups throughout the night, while resident dance crew R.A.I.D. (Random Acts of Irreverent Dance) will be working the Echoplex stage with their trademark gold-suits and go-go dance moves.

Launched in 2003, Bootie was the first club night in the United States dedicated solely to the burgeoning artform of the bootleg mashup – and is now the biggest mashup event in the world, with regular parties in several cities on four continents. Mixing and matching every conceivable musical genre, era, and style into one big dance party where everyone feels welcome, Bootie’s DJs keep your brain guessing and body dancing with creative song combinations, celebrating – and satirizing – the many different forms of music. Bootie provides the soundtrack for the A.D.D. generation, with free mashup CDs will be given away like candy!

Thursday 07.22.10: DOWN AND DERBY ROLLER DISCO @ echoplex

Posted by damara - filed in 21+, Dance Night, echoplex, events

July22DDFlyer

The Los Angeles event is set apart from Down and Derby parties in other cities by its authentic 70s feel. The resident DJs don’t just spin popular tunes for which the era has become known—they reach into the depths of 70s music to bring partiers the obscure hits that may not be recognizable by most, but are truly indicative of the culture and lifestyle of the era.

Down and Derby, is a retro-inspired roller-skating party created and designed to give attendees a unique nightlife experience. The interactive throwback events combine décor reminiscent of a 70s roller disco with attendees participating through wearing fashion attire evocative of the era. DJs known for pushing the limits of mixing and music production are procured, adding vibrant energy to the event with both underground and popular mixes.

The entry fee is $5 with RSVP, $10 at the door and quad skates of every size will be available to rent for another $5. Guests are welcome to bring their own roller skates to the event.

MNDR || Listen || MP3

Brooklyn’s Amanda Warner makes dynamic electro-pop under the moniker MNDR, and she’s been building buzz with her project while also working with folks like Mark Ronson. “I Go Away”, a major highlight from the her debut EP, E.P.E., is filled with distinctive synths that melt all over a spare, echoing drum beat like a candy house left out in the hot sun. It’s a serious slow-dance pop confection, but Warner keeps a clear head lyrically. “I Go Away” initially sounds like a post-relationship-fallout slow burner, as she asks, “How did I get here/ Without feeling anything”. Soon, though, you realize that she isn’t calming down– she’s getting pumped up. “This is my anthem/ I know it like I know everything”, Warner softly declares, as if she’s getting ready to step out in front of the curtain, before letting out titular squeaks during a chorus that favorably evokes Santigold as the track builds to its cathartic peak. – Pitchfork

Torches In Trees
Any band that plays a guerrilla gig in Chinatown after being told they were too young to play at the venue they had been booked at, is an instant favorite in our book. The surreal combination of beautiful music, rent a cops on bikes and LAPD’s finest searching frantically for the power outlet, while suprised shoppers and wanderers looked/cheered them on one night in Chinatown square, is something one cant easily forget. One of our favorite gigs of the year.” -Club Underground
“The talented multi-instrumentalists manages to produce sounds that blend together to create what can be described as the musical equivalent of a drug injected directly to your brain as sound waves through those aural receptors we call ears. -Radio 23

Go West Young Man
“Melody merchant Damin Suarez (ex-the Fictions) has crafted an homage to classic pop that pushes the same buttons as the likes of Elvis Costello, Ben Folds and a host of ’60s and ’70s hitmakers who used horns and harmonies to sweeten their piano arrangements. Whether guitar- or keyboard-based, Suarez’s tunes are as memorable as anything contemporaries such as the 88 or the Little Ones have made, and GWYM’s frisky rhythms punctuate the bite in his lyrics. In an era so many artists feel compelled to deconstruct pop to make it interesting, Suarez has built himself a castle. Recommended.” – K. Bronson, Buzzbands

THE ANSWERING MACHINE

Manchester’s The Answering Machine have been playing together for around three years and get compared a lot to Los Campesinos! but owe more than a little to The Strokes and Maximo Park as well. Though if you’re read their blog, frontman Martin Colough is clearly into more obscure indie like The Radio Dept. and ’80s cult act The Brilliant Corners. One of my favorites the year. – Brooklyn Vegan

ZOLA JESUS || Listen

There’s plenty of non-urban college girls with slightly hip parents, girls who felt “weird” in high-school and embraced the costumes of goth, the bleakness of Joy Division and the rants of Nietzsche, automatically declaring “French and philosophy” as majors upon arriving on campus. What makes Nika Danilova stand out from her absynthetic cohort is that she talked her parents into opera singing lessons early on and used those skills to record a really interesting lo-fi album (The Spoils) a couple of years ago as Zola Jesus. The indierati loved it and so Danilova has now graduated to proper studios (the recent Stridulum EP) and touring a mesmerizing stage act, invoking the ghosts of Lydia Lunch, Diamanda Galas and even a little Grace Slick. Those who wish Gaga was actually weird and We Are the World a little less drum-circley should find much to like in La Jesus.- LA Weekly

bearracudajuly

After a FANTASTIC debut party in May, Bearracuda returns to LA for another night of fun, furry dancing! Our last party had SO many hot guys of all shapes and sizes.

We’ve received awesome feedback from our last LA event and will be adding a couple of go-go bears, beefing up the visuals and handing out some giveaway at our future events.

Returning to LA from Bearracuda Portland, we welcome back DJ SAM STORICKS. Sam played our first Bearracuda New Year’s Eve party in 2006 and has been a big part of the club ever since. He also makes guest appearances at our San Francisco & Seattle parties and will be flying down for another night of great music. http://www.djsamstoricks.com/

From Bearracuda San Francisco, we bring you the LA debut of DJ Medic! Medic is our resident DJ back in San Francisco and he fills our dance floor full of beefy guys every month. He’ll be kicking off the evening’s festivities at 9pm.

It’s all about the dancing, beard rubs and socializing at Bearracuda, but we’ve also got an extra special live performance at 10:30pm from San Francisco duo: EJECTOR! They’ll be doing a short, but very sweet 3 song set. Check out their FB fan page at:

http://www.facebook.com/pages/ejector/26614420226?ref=ts

From Bootie San Francisco, DJ team:
THE FACE MELTERS:
FOX
KOOL KARLO

Resident Bootie DJ:
DJ PAUL V.

Resident dance crew:
R.A.I.D. (Random Acts of Irreverent Dance)

Coming down from Bootie San Francisco, Bootie LA presents the mashup DJ duo known as The Face Melters — a.k.a. Fox and Kool Karlo. These two like-minded DJs realized they had similar styles after spinning in the same clubs for years, and their recent collaboration as the Face Melters has yielded an electrifying mix of hip-hop, house, electro, and funk. Using four turntables, they mash all of these styles together to create dance floor bliss for party-goers worldwide.

Resident DJ Paul V. also holds it down on the decks, spinning all your favorite (and soon-to-be favorite) mashups throughout the night, while resident dance crew R.A.I.D. (Random Acts of Irreverent Dance) takes over Echoplex the stage with their trademark gold-suited go-go action!

GENERAL TREES
TIPPA LEE
and SURPRISE GUESTS

plus the Echodelic Soundsystem
DJs : Tom Chasteen, Roy Corduroy, Dungeonmaster, and Boss Harmony

and MCs Jah Faith, Ras Benji, Chicho Don plus guests

Sister Nancy is a favorite at the Dub Club and always brings the fire when she comes through. Her tune “Bam Bam” is loved by fans of all genres of music worldwide…but there’s nothing like hearing the original female dj live and direct on the mic…
General Trees will be making his first stop at the Dub Club and we can’t wait to hear his gravel voice booming out over our PA. Trees had many Jamaican hits in the 80s and he is known for his great live performances and his arsenal of lyrics…
Tippa Lee started in the music business toasting on his fathers sound system age 8 , “standing up on a beer bottle box to reach the mic”. He made his first recording at King Tubbys studio at age 12 , and later had a Jamaican No 1 hit with ‘No Trouble We” in the 80s.
And….surprise guests! Over the years at Dub Club surprise guests have included many heavy hitters , so you never know….
And as usual with Sound System style shows at the Dub Club , all the performers will be backed up by the Echodelic selectors on the turntables…

Wednesday 07.07.10: DUB CLUB presents The Return of the General BRIGADIER JERRY @ echoplex & echo

dubclubNEWBriggy

The Return of the General
BRIGADIER JERRY
backed by Echodelic Soundsystem

plus upstairs in the Echo
DJs Dungeonmaster+Roy Corduroy bring you
“Timezone” – psychedelic global music mashup

Briggy blows the roof off the Dub Club every time he passes through. His microphone mastery and lyrical versatility are unparalleled. Don’t miss this appearance from a true sound system legend!

More influential through his live performances than his scant recordings, Brigadier Jerry was one of Jamaica’s top DJs at the dawn of the dancehall era. A brilliant lyrical improviser, Briggy — as he was affectionately known — elevated the standards for speed and fluidity in DJ chatting technique, laying the groundwork for much of what followed. Despite early dancehall’s taste for slackness, Jerry’s subject matter was almost always spiritual and cultural, though he did have a sense of humor and was an excellent battle DJ. Brigadier Jerry was born Robert Russell in Kingston on September 28, 1957. He started his career in show business by trying standup comedy in his early teens, but soon moved on to work for sound systems. He started out at the legendary U-Roy’s King SturGav Hi-Fi system in the early ’70s, and soon moved on to the Jah Love Muzik system; this latter was run by the Rastafarian sect to which he belonged, the Twelve Tribes of Israel. While with Jah Love, bootleg cassette tapes of his live performances began to circulate among DJ aficionados, resulting in packed houses wherever he played. Despite his sterling underground reputation and influential, melodic toasting style, Jerry was barely represented on record until 1982. He’d previously cut several tracks for Studio One, including “Every Man Me Brethren” and “Dance in Montreal,” and appeared on several local singles with other Twelve Tribes members. In 1982, he cut a new version of the Slim Smith riddim “Never Let Go,” which he retitled “Pain” and released on the small Jywanza label. It was a major hit, rocketing to the top of the Jamaican charts. Meanwhile, he also mentored the career of female DJ Sister Carol, and DJed for nearly every prominent sound system in Jamaica. A semi-official live album, Live at the Controls, appeared in 1983, but he didn’t record his proper debut LP until 1985. Called Jamaica Jamaica, it was the closest he came to capturing the excitement of his live gigs in the studio. Several more singles followed over the rest of the ’80s, but Jerry remained a live DJ at heart. He relocated to New York on a permanent basis in 1988, and put together a second album with 1990′s On the Road. In 1992, Jerry recorded his third proper album, Hail Him, for Tapper Zukie’s label. Another album, Freedom Street, appeared on the VP label in 1995. When U-Roy reactivated his King SturGav Hi-Fi sound system, Jerry joined up as a regular. Today, Briggy still travels to Europe and Japan touring. He recently released his fifth album entitled, “Showers of Blessings” on the Virtuous Woman label .

Echoplex:
DAVID RODIGAN
DOWNBEAT THE RULER
Echodelic Soundsystem DJs

echo:
BUYEPONGO
Echodelic Soundsystem DJs

David Rodigan and Downbeat The Ruler (aka Tony Screw) are 2 of the best known reggae selectors on the planet.
Their arsenal of exclusive dubplates are legendary, as are their live sound clashes. This event however is not a clash in the proper sense, but a night of pure musical madness with the 2 DJs trading sets back and forth and vibing up the dance til the roof comes off the place! Buyepongo is one of LAs finest young bands representing the Cumbia and Vallento styles. We have been wanting to have them at the Dub Club for a while now and we know it will be a long hot night in the Echo!

Posted by damara - filed in 18+, Dance Night, echoplex, events

DD_Flyer061710updated

It’s hard to believe that One year ago the very first Down & Derby went off at the EchoPlex. Down & Derby has seen over 60 productions, three music festivals and now has events in more than six cities. I’m pretty sure we are responsible for a handful of regrettable decisions, and most likely, a few babies.

This months Derby is for the hundreds that fit their yoga class in, break out their spandex and get silly at our jam. And to show our appreciation here is what we have instore for you.

The first 100 attendees through the Echoplex door will receive a Down & Derby American Apparel tank-top created by Family Industries. The following 50 partygoers to arrive will receive a custom branded Down & Derby fanny pack with a can of Colt 45 inside.

Resident skate guard DJ SHR3D will be joined by Ra Ra Riot and Discovery lead singer Wes Miles, controlling the backbeat of disco-inspired party anthems.

More than 200 roller skates available to rent or bring your own. All wheels accepted, even blades.

This month, Bootie celebrates five years of mashing it up, LA-style! Since launching at The Echo back in 2005, Bootie has grown quite a bit, becoming the epicenter for mashups in Southern California. To mark its 5-Year Anniversary, at 11 PM, Bootie is proud to present the return of Smash-Up Derby, the house band at Bootie SF, and the world’s first mashup rock band. Also performing the Midnight Mashup Show will be Bootie LA’s resident gold-suited dance crew R.A.I.D. (Random Acts of Irreverent Dance).

Bootie creators Adrian & Mysterious D finally return from their world tour, where they’ve spent the past two months doing Bootie parties in Europe, Asia, and Brazil. Resident DJ Paul V. will also join them on the decks. Mash up your look for a chance to win fabulous prizes for the “Best Mashup Outfit,” and get your picture taken at the DrunkRockers.com Photo Booth. Mixing and matching every conceivable musical genre, era, and style into one big dance party where everyone feels welcome, Bootie’s DJs keep your brain guessing and body dancing with creative song combinations, celebrating — and satirizing — the many different forms of music. Bootie provides the soundtrack for the A.D.D. generation, with free mashup CDs will be given away like candy!

:: SO WHY DO SPUNK ON GAY PRIDE WEEKEND? ::
Because so many of the alternative gay community do not feel connected to - nor interested in -  what’s offered at the Weho Pride festival. From the hideous circuit music tent, to the warm beer in cups, to the generally bland live entertainment – there’s plenty of indie gays who just totally stay away. So SPUNK is just the fix for something different!

SPUNK is a gay event, but also welcomes women & friendly heteros, too.

Friday 06.18.10: Echo and Club Underground present PANTHA DU PRINCE / DELPHIC @ echo

Posted by samantha - filed in 18+, Dance Night, echo, events

panthaduprince

Pantha Du Prince || Listen || Watch

Though he lacks the crossover name recognition of producers like the Field, Burial, and Lindstrøm, Germany’s Hendrik Weber is one of the leading figures in modern techno. As Pantha du Prince, he has up until now released two albums of meticulous, minimal-inspired house music. The last, 2007′s This Bliss, found the rare balance between ambient sweep and dancefloor bounce, and it’s only grown in stature since its release. In part because of a move from the smaller Dial Records to Rough Trade and guest spots from some indie heavyweights, his new LP, Black Noise, is being met with more excitement this time around. And with good reason: Said to be born out of a period of musical exploration in the Swiss Alps, the record is both a stylistic departure for Weber and an extension of what he already does well.

Weber is unlike most minimal techno producers in that he doesn’t look to locate one groove and ride it for the course of a track. His songs open up, unfurl, and regularly change course. With Black Noise he develops this to incorporate a wide range of sounds– field recordings, atonal noise, and stray percussion all populate the album. Above all, here he aims to reproduce sounds already in nature, and where This Bliss was airy and celestial, this record is gritty and earthbound. It’s darker, more forceful, and more chaotic. – Pitchfork

Friday 07.16.10: CLUB UNDERGROUND with SECRET HISTORY / SWEATER GIRLS / WATERLASO @ echo

Posted by damara - filed in 18+, Dance Night, echo, events

undergroundflyer

Secret History (New York)
Having created an album that was labeled “best of the decade” in Pitchfork’s P2K list, Michael Grace, Jr. (then of cult indie-pop icons My Favorite) and his decade long collaborators have remade/remodeled their sound for the new decade with The Secret History. The band’s debut LP, The World That Never Was, declares the beginning of the ‘Post-Pop’ era with songs concerned with the monsters & ghosts of youth. Now joined by singer Lisa Ronson (daughter of glam rock legend Mick Ronson), the bright lights and shadows of Grace & Co.’s songs come to life in a wholly new way, drawing comparisons to The Smiths, The Go-Betweens and Roxy Music. “Not only lives up to My Favorite’s legacy, but surpasses it… not since the first two New Pornographers records have the songs, vocals, and production come together so perfectly. On The World That Never Was, they’ve crafted one of the best, most lyrical, and emotionally powerful pop albums of the past however long.” –Allmusic.com

Sweater Girls (LA)
Smart, energetic and charming, Sweater Girls are a five-piece indiepop band from Los Angeles, CA. Formed in 2009, Sweater Girls are Joseph Teran (lead guitar), Jackie Hundza (drums), Allan Kingdom (formerly of the Siddeleys, bass), Diana Barraza (vocals and guitar) and Tatiana
Sanchez (keyboards and glockenspiel). Touted as a “full band Softies” and a “calmer Black Tambourine” by Indie Pages, Sweater Girls aim to melt hearts with their knitted brand of sweet and tender tunes. –Happy Happy Birthday To Me Records

Waterlaso (LA)
a band that is somewhere in between happy sweet pop sunshine and tender sadness. –ectomag.com

Friday 06.04.10: Echo & Club Underground present QUADRON / EVAN VOYTAS @ echo

Posted by damara - filed in 18+, Dance Night, echo, events

quadron

QUADRON

Quadron is a child that’s been made by Coco and Robin. Both were part of the soul collective “Boom Clap Bachelors” who in early 2008 secured much respect and success with their debut “Kort Før Dine Læber”. Here they began their collaboration, and Robin fell for Coco’s beautiful voice and ability to improvise with playful ease.

Even though Coco is only 21 she is already a veteran performer, and was literally born to do it. She was a key figure as the front woman in the live band for Boom clap bachelors’ band, and now she is thrilling audiences with Robin and hers own material. Robin Hannibal has a long CV, counting collaborations with Nobody Beats The Beats, Aloe Blacc, Omas Keith from SA-RA, Wally Badarou from talking heads / level 42, Erick Sermon, Plant Life, Yamwho, Buraka Som Sistema and has international super stars, like Pharrell Williams (Nerd) and James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem), declaring themselves fans of some of his other projects like “Owusu & Hannibal” and “Parallel Dance Ensemble”.

Quadrons stated goal with the debut is to give the soul scene a vitamin boost and provide an alternative to the american R’n'B that is dominating the charts. They call their music electronic soul, mixing the sound of hand-played instruments with the benefits of today’s computer-related techniques.

Thursday 05.20.10: DOWN AND DERBY ROLLER DISCO @ echoplex

Posted by damara - filed in 21+, Dance Night, echoplex, events

downandderby

BearracudaMay10

After a very long wait and searching for the best venue for the club, Bearracuda comes to Los Angeles! On Saturday, May 29th we invade the Echoplex for one massive night of furry fun.

Flying down from San Francisco, we welcome DJ/Producer: MATT CONSOLA. Over the last 20+ years, he’s had an exciting career playing memorable events across the country and across the world. Recently, he had the honor of opening for The Pet Shop Boys at The Warfield for their Pandemonium World Tour September 22nd & 23rd 2009.

Joining Matt is our resident DJ at Bearracuda Portland, SAM STORICKS. Sam played our first Bearracuda New Year’s Eve party in 2006 and has been a big part of the club ever since. He also makes guest appearances at our San Francisco & Seattle parties and will be flying down for his LA debut.

Bearracuda is the largest attended bear dance party on the West Coast w/ regular parties in San Francisco, Seattle & Portland. Voted “Best club for queer men” in 2008 & 2009 by the San Francisco Bay Guardian. We’ve got beards, bears, cubs, pups, chubs, beefcakes, furballs and other wildlife!

Friday 05.21.10: Club Underground & Echo present FRANCIS AND THE LIGHTS / TEEN INC @ echo

Francis and The Lights || Listen || Watch

Everything about Francis Farewell Starlite, leader of synth-pop throwbacks Francis and the Lights, is insanely meticulous. Sipping on Orangina in his cement-floored Lower East Side apartment one crisp January afternoon, Starlite is dressed neatly in a dark, military-ish overcoat, charcoal-gray pressed pants, and expensive-looking black dress shoes. The bathmat is folded tidily over the tub in the bathroom; racks of clothes hang from the ceiling, still covered in plastic from the dry cleaners. A trapdoor in one corner of the room leads to the basement, where you’ll find a full-blown recording studio with the instruments all ordered just so, including an array of synths with all the white keys painted black. Starlite explains that it’s a songwriting aide: “It helps me break the mold. The difference between black and white keys is that there is no difference.”

This is where Starlite records most of his songs: shimmering, complex nuggets of ’80s-excess pop that call to mind the brainy soul shakedowns of Scritti Politti and the cocktail-jazz fusions of Steely Dan. (Studio obsessives both, too.) Since 2007, he’s released two excellent EPs and one single, a modest output with nonetheless killer highlights, including the tender, falsettoed-out ballad “Strawberries” and the spare future-funk jam “My Goals.” You may not have heard of him yet, but Starlite promises to be one of the year’s breakout successes. – The Village Voice
