Saturday 04.10.10: SAINT MOTEL / VOXHAUL BROADCAST / PITY PARTY @ echoplex
Posted by damara - filed in 18+, echoplex, events
Saint Motel || Listen || Watch
With white flowers attached to their microphone stands and dressed in their best black and white variations, they launched into things with a contagious energy that would spread to the outermost corners of the venue. Unique to the performance wasn’t just the visuals projected as their onstage backdrop – we’re talking alternating cuts/edits of live visuals of the audience, close-ups of the band members, clips from music videos and film in (what else) black and white.
What was more so unique was how difficult it was to discern who in attendance was a virgin to the Saint Motel experience or well-versed in their rhymes and lyrical reasonings. The majority of the crowd, if not clapping, whooping, or smiling in sheer interest, was singing along and dancing almost inherently. “Feel Our Wrath”, making their way to particular favorites “Butch”, “Do Everything Now”, “To My Enemies”, and “Show Me Where You Want It”. You name it, it was a fan favorite.
With slight revision, we should have instead said that if you haven’t yet been to a Saint Motel show and you currently live in the Los Angeles area, there’s really no excuse. You’ve no idea what you’re missing. – BeatCrave

Earth || Listen || Watch || MP3
Earth, the older of the two, has refined itself over almost 20 years. Formed by Dylan Carlson, still its leader, it once favored aggression and chord changes that felt like rock, even at a ritual crawl and without singing. But recently its music sounds more like a film background, with a scent of Miles Davis’s “In a Silent Way.” On Tuesday Mr. Carlson played a Fender Stratocaster with a clean tone; Adrienne Davies played drums, applying each slow beat carefully; Don McGreevy’s bass notes, reverberating in the hall, massaged the soles of your feet; and Steve Moore warmed up the chords with electric piano. Earth doesn’t really do peaks and valleys; it makes its case without a fuss and leaves you wanting more. – NY Times

The Deadly Syndrome || Listen || Watch
Well, the long wait is finally over–after releasing their excellent debut, The Ortolan on Dim Mak records in 2007 and playing a slew of shows, tours, and sweater festivals, The Deadly Syndrome have finally returned with a new disc of their frenetic and hook-charged rock. Nolens Volens (Latin for “whether willingly or unwillingly”) will be independently released by the band on March 23rd–meaning you’ll be able to purchase digital copies from the usual gang of distributors like iTunes and Emusic, or you can buy a physical copy from the band’s website.
Produced by the band and co-mixed with Kennie Takahashi, Nolens Volens‘ sound, according to the band, promises “less ghosts, and less wolves. We tried to be as honest as we could. Hopefully we succeeded.” And, from the sound of “Wingwalker,” a preview track on the band’s website, it may well have been worth the wait. – Web In Front

Midnight Mashup Show:
ANNA KONDA as Lady Gaga
Direct from the UK, Bootie LA is proud to present a rare Stateside appearance from The Kleptones, one of Britain’s best mashup producers. Since 2003, they’ve released six full-length mashup albums — all for free on the internet — including the seminal Queen bootleg album, “A Night At The Hip-Hopera.” Their recently-released double album — their first in two years — immediately blew up the blogosphere with its dual sides: “Uptime” provides the Bootie dance floor bangers, while “Downtime” plays the role of a chilled-out after-party.
Special guest DJ Shyboy joins resident DJ Paul V. on the decks throughout the night, and for the Midnight Mashup Show, it’s the return of Anna Konda, who will be channeling a mashed-up performance of Lady Gaga.
Launched in 2003, Bootie was the first club night in the United States dedicated solely to the burgeoning artform of the bootleg mashup — and is now the biggest mashup event in the world, with monthly parties in eight cities on three continents. Mixing and matching every conceivable musical genre, era, and style into one big dance party where everyone feels welcome, Bootie provides the soundtrack for the A.D.D. generation.
Resident DJs Adrian, Mysterious D, and Paul V. keep your brain guessing and body dancing with creative song combinations, celebrating — and satirizing — the many different forms of music. And free mashup CDs will be given away like candy!

Friday 04.30.10: HEARTLESS BASTARDS / HACIENDA / AMY COOK @ echoplex
Posted by damara - filed in 18+, echoplex, events
Heartless Bastards || Listen || Watch
Erika Wennerstrom’s enormous voice typically dominates discussion of this Ohio trio, and for good reason. Hers is a mighty blues holler, projecting self-conflict not just to the rafters, but to the rafters in other states. As distinctive as Wennerstrom sounds, however, her confident guitar work and the tight rhythm section of Mike Lamping and Kevin Vaughn do just as much to color these songs. On their third album, the Bastards stray further and further from the monolithic blues-rock of their 2005 debut while sharpening the soft focus of 2006’s All This Time. The guitar-heavy title track certainly lives up to its name, sloping steeply to a psychedelic peak. “Nothing Seems the Same” and closing track “Sway” jam more sparsely, but The Mountain sounds best when the Bastards explore unlikelier textures, like the sinister acoustic jangle of “Be So Happy” or the banjo-spiked ramble of “Had To Go.” This album isn’t merely a single peak, but a whole mountain range. – Paste Magazine

Saturday 05.08.10: RED SPAROWES / FANG ISLAND @ echoplex
Posted by damara - filed in 18+, echoplex, events
Red Sparowes || Listen || Watch
There has never been as pronounced of a leap in style and scope as with Red Sparowes’ latest offering. The Fear is Excruciating, But Therein Lies the Answer maintains their layered arrangements and swirling amplified crescendos, Americana noir soundscapes (punctuated by the extended pedal steel on “In Every Mind”), and gloriously triumphant melodies (“Giving Birth to Imagined Saviors”). Earlier records focused on the larger scope of the album, but the new album is song-centered, with the individual tracks harboring stronger independent identities. And where previous endeavors found the band propelled by enormous walls of sound, they now temper their monolithic progressions with distinct passages of separated and soft-spoken instrumentation. Red Sparowes were suspiciously absent from the playing field over the last three years, and now it’s apparent that they were busy drafting the grandest statement and finest achievement of their existence.
Thunderheads storming across the prairie, outraged students taking to the streets, migratory herds stampeding along the tundra–any number of images could describe the grandiose scope of Red Sparowes’ lush vignettes. Wielding both a master’s sense of nuance and an outsider artist’s unhindered expressionist zeal, the Los Angeles quintet created a catalog of haunting and hallucinatory guitar orchestrations over the course of the millennium’s opening decade. With two albums, a string of split releases, multiple U.S. and European tours, and a number of line-up changes under their belt, Red Sparowes are currently poised to release their third album and most impressive creation to date, The Fear is Excruciating, But Therein Lies the Answer.

Monday 03.15.10: Echo & Warp Records present GONJASUFI (dj set) / GASLAMP KILLER / MAIN FRAME @ echoplex
Posted by damara - filed in 18+, Dance Night, echoplex, events
In pairing with L.A. producer Gaslamp Killer, Gonjasufi has found a powerful outlet for his otherworldly strain of singing. Together they’ve created A Sufi and a Killer, one of the most fascinating slabs of hallucinogenic head-nod music to arise from Southern California’s post-hip-hop vanguard. Unlike the digital bleeps and squelches of SoCal contemporaries FlyLo and Nosaj Thing, however, Gaslamp Killer and Gonjasufi draw from their hip-hop background to create an LP that could as easily fit on the Stones Throw roster as well as it does IDM-centric Warp. The beats knock, but for every moment of b-boy-friendly atmosphere, there’s another moment– or a simultaneous one– that makes like 21st century acid rock.
Gonjasufi’s vocals are both haunting and haunted, coolly assertive yet frequently fixated on mortal matters, and they bleed vividly through Gaslamp’s corroded analog wall of zero-fi psychedelic noise. The results are stark: Brooding, bad-trip laments (“Kobwebz”), a doo-wop number punctuated by spacey twang (“Duet”), a warping of the blues (“Ageing”). Even the more straightforward stuff has a grimy quality to it, particularly the heavy soul of “Change”, the bar-jazz tension of “Advice”, and the woozy “Kowboys & Indians” with its Eastern vocals looped against a rust-covered revision of club rap beats circa 2003. – Pitchfork

So I’m sure you guys all know we’re opening the Los Angeles chapter of Мишка on February 20th in Echo Park. The shop will open at noon and there will be exclusives, Spring 2010 product and just an all-around jovial atmosphere. From 7-9pm we’ll also be having an opening reception in the shop with some drinks and music and invite everyone from the community and greater Los Angeles area to come by. But as soon as that’s over we’re going to show the West one of those things we do best, and that’s throw a party! And boy do we have a party for you guys…
It’ll be a riotous evening as we brought in DJs like your West Coast Dubstep Champion, 12th Planet who’ll be doing a set w/ Ras Kass (yes that Ras Kass), Franki Chan of IHEARTCOMIX and the Killing Spree duo of Gibby & Zane is Trouble who’ll bring the dark and dancey to the dance floor. And if that wasn’t already enough for a great party, we couldn’t not have a few bands perform now could we? We brought in West Coast Lo-Fi heavy weight such as Wavves and Best Coast along with very awesome The Franks to keep the party rocking all night long. But wait… that still isn’t everything! The cherry on top of it all is that your host of the evening will be none other than Andy Milonakis, who’ll be gracing you all with laughs and I’m sue a few impromptu freestyles. Who knows, he may even battle the elusive Turd Wolf if we get enough liquor in him.

Monday 04.12.10: CRYSTAL CASTLES @ echoplex
Posted by damara - filed in 18+, echoplex, events
Crystal Castles played a typically raucous show at the Leeds Festival this afternoon (August 29), with singer Alice Glass leaping into the crowd and spending much of the set propped up by audience members as she sang.
The electronic duo – with Ethan Kath on keyboards and effects and a live drummer – were playing on the NME/Radio 1 Stage on the second day of the event.
It wasn’t long into the set before black-clad Glass began her high-octane stage antics, mounting the drum kit to sing during ‘Courtship Dating’.
Then, during ‘Reckless’, she leapt into the front row, still singing as fans and security guards held her aloft.
She eventually clambered back onto the stage, grabbing a strobe lamp during ‘Crimewave’ and spitting into the photo pit.
She later returned to the front row, where she spent most of the final 20 minutes of the set.
The band ended their set with ‘Intimate’, Glass curling up onstage to rest, before leaving the arena clasping a bottle of whisky to huge cheers. – NME

Friday 03.26.10: YACHT / BOBBY BIRDMAN / SMALL BLACK / WASHED OUT / PICTUREPLANE @ echoplex
Posted by damara - filed in 18+, All Ages, echo, echoplex, events
Jona Bechtolt– founding member of YACHT, former member of the Blow– is a huge talent, something that may not have been readily apparent on any of his three previous LPs. Those albums, created largely as solo endeavors, will not have prepared listeners for See Mystery Lights. Now an official partnership between Bechtolt and Claire L. Evans, who performed on several songs on 2007’s I Believe In You, Your Magic Is Real, YACHT finally feel like a full-fledged band with direction and vision, particularly given the added weight (or rather, levity) of Evans’ influence.
The songs on See Mystery Lights– from the bouncy, burbling you-can’t-take-it-with-you screed “The Afterlife” (which plays like a less spastic companion piece to the Mae Shi’s “Run to Your Grave”) to the roller rink-ready vocoder vocals of “I’m In Love With a Ripper”– represent YACHT at their most poppy. It’s a collection of stone jams that finds the band finally as hellbent on experimenting and expanding the boundaries of its sonic scope as it is on having fun. Built on electronic foundations– laser effects, skittering computerized beats, and spacey synth lines (or guitar riffs that have been tuned or distorted to sound like synths)– these new songs are giddy with creative freedom while remaining tethered in service of their melodies. The vocal melodies are bright and buoyant, but delivered (by either band member, or in unison) in a chanted, oftentimes detached monotone that plays up the repetitive lyrics’ mantra-like feel and adds a welcome undercurrent of slacker cool to their otherwise sugary optimism.- Pitchfork

A Night of Roots and Culture
RAS MICHAEL and the Sons of Negus
mixed by Scientist
with special guests:
All Star Sabar Orchestra
and a acoustic set from:
Claudius Linton
Ras Michael was born George Michael Henry in Kingston, Jamaica. He grew up in the Rastafarian community in the ghettos of Kingston. He is known throughout the world as a reggae vocalist and Nyabinghi drum specialist whose style is the heartbeat of roots reggae.
In the early 60’s, Ras Michael formed the Sons of Negus, a rastafarian group of drummers and singers who had grown up in the tradition of burra drumming, one of the few surviving remnants of their African heritage. In Jamaica, the burra and kumina drums first sounded to celebrate the religious and social gatherings of the African people in Jamaica. Gradually, the Rastaman took over, beating the drums at their prayer meetings, or groundations. While Ras Michael’s music is drawn from an amalgam of biblical and African chants, he distinguished himself from the other drummers in the early Rastafarian movements by forging the connection between the traditional hand drums and the modern electric instruments used in commercial music, thereby taking his message of equal rights and unity from a few scattered communities in Jamaica’s parishes out to the entire world.
Ras Michael has worked, recorded and performed with some of the most legendary musicians in the world, including Peter Tosh, Lee Perry, Burning Spear, Stevie Wonder and Roberta Flack. He performed with Bob Marley at the One Love Peace Concert in Jamaica in 1978. Later that year, Marley was asked what he thought of Ras Michael. “Ras Michael is a roots master and a Nyabinghi specialist” he said. “He tells it like it is.” Ras Michael has recorded more than 24 albums over the years, including the memorable Kibir Am Lak (Glory to God) , Rastafari Dub featuring Peter Tosh, Robbie Shakespeare, and Earl “Chinna” Smith , Love Thy Neighbor ),and Zion Train .His tune “None Of Jah Jah Children No Cry” is a reggae anthem. Ras Michael is one of the founders and president of the Rastafarian International/Marcus Garvey Culture Center in Los Angeles, and and he continues to tour internationally .”The music is spreading” Ras Michael says, “and the people are getting more of an understanding. Without the one drop hard-core reggae music, without the Nyabinghi drop, reggae would not be reggae and have no true identity. It brings the elders, it brings the old man, it brings the young guys, it brings the ghetto people, the uptown people, downtown and suburbs…everyone, with true expressions of themselves, so it is reality.”
The All Star Sabar Orchestra is a young group of musicians recently arrived in LA from Dakar , Senegal where they were frequent performers in the nightclubs and cultural gatherings of that African capitol. Composed of 5 percussionist/vocalists , their music is a modern urban take on traditional styles. They rap in the Wolof language over intricate and fiery drumming in the “Bayefaal” mode.
At the mixing board for both of the bands will be the dubmaster Scientist. The late King Tubby is generally recognized as the father of Dub music, the style of reggae known for heavy drum and bass tones and wild reverb and echoes. Scientist was Tubbys apprentice and learned at his side, mixing reggae records from the age of 13 onwards. Many of Scientists albums are dub classics , such as “Scientist Rids The World of the Evil Curse of the Vampires”. With him at the controls the bass will be in the place!

Friday 02.19.10: I PROMOTE GOOD BANDS, BeatCrave and Echo present RADARS TO THE SKY / ONE TRICK PONY / MISSISSIPPI MAN / RADEMACHER @ echoplex
Posted by damara - filed in 18+, echoplex, events
In a set also peppered with such ‘classic’ material (some of which will reappear on the new album) as “I Might,” “Zurich,” and “Victoria,” Radars offered a glimpse into their new direction as a band since the departure of guitarist Seamus Simpson in January (Simpson is now working with the excellent Thailand)—dense, insular and bruising, with just as many nods towards complex indie-rock as there were towards hooky new wave.
Opener “Sharpen Your Teeth” began as a dreamy, slow-motion metallic clash of guitars and keys, which unfurled into the sci-fi bounce of the suite-like, multi-part jangle of “As the Nurses Scurry.” A crucial tension in the music of Radars to the Sky is the tug-of-war between epic, long-form art-rock and crushing, melodic indie; with those two opening songs, the band seemed to be signaling a move in the direction of the former. However, they can still detonate a catchy rock ‘n roll tune when the inclination strikes—“The Apple Never Falls” was all slash and burn guitar kinetics, while “Sergeant,” was a series of stop-start grooves and crunching, anthemic hooks, as well as one of the evening’s strongest tunes.
The highlight of the set, though, may have been the closer, “1624.” A driving song of divebomb guitar swoons and rhythmic surges wrapped within a rumbling new wave dirge, “1624” exemplifies the sound of Radars to the Sky as it is today—a band far more interested in grooves, texture and detail, or as Mouse of Classical Geek Theatre put it, they’re playing “indie rock for the indie rocker.” – Web In Front

For the rest of this review, body glitter = sweat. Iowa’s mainframe zaftig-white-female hip hop star, Leslie Hall, cleaned house at the Echoplex Friday night with her traveling circus act Leslie and the Lys. It looked like a neon fringe and gold lamè factory exploded all over Echo Park.
More than a musician, Leslie Hall is a movement, because Leslie could not do what she does (and she does it so well) at any other time than the present. She exists now as the result of a culture in whiplash from several pop commodity crashes: Suzanne Somers, Jazzercise, heroine-chic, daytime talk shows, the celebutante, Tony Robbins, and, of course, the Bedazzler.

Gram Rabbit || Listen || Watch
They’ve gone from strange to stranger, those Joshua Tree denizens known as Gram Rabbit. On their third album, RadioAngel and the RobotBeat, they come out spitting, with lead singer and co-songwriter Jesika von Rabbit coming off like Grace Jones with a bunny fetish on the fed-up-with-technology electro-ditty “American Hookers.” Considering they go to sleep every night under a sky filled with more stars than the rest of us can only dream of, it’s not surprising their lyrics express a great deal of concern for “the world gone wrong.” They also come from a place with fewer teeth per capita than the rest of the state, hence references to priests smoking crystal meth and pit bulls. Even weirder is “The Rest of Us Sleep,” which sounds like video-game effects. My pick hit is “Fancy Dancy,” with what may be the best line of the summer: “Any way you slice it, it’s still bologna.” They even wrote a song about Landers, called “Landers,” which is some blips and plucks and pounds and maybe some voices. Bonus: Most of the new tunes are excellent for doing “The Robot.” – LA Weekly

Thursday 02.18.10: FYF Presents COLD CAVE / SMITH WESTERNS / BEST COAST @ Echoplex
Posted by damara - filed in All Ages, echoplex, events
Synth-pop, post punk, new wave, atmospheric industrial– all these references, which came and went and were fashionable again a half-decade ago, somehow manage to feel fresh here. It’s probably because the songs on Love Comes Close are consistently catchy and well constructed– once you have that down, genre concerns become secondary. Still, these are some awfully icy landscapes, and Cold Cave do have a way with mood. Take, for instance, opener “Cebe and Me”, which exhibits a pulsing, Ambien-addled dry cold that threatens to wear thin if over-exercised. But this track turns out to be an entry-level teaser, as album highlight “Love Comes Close” chimes in right on time, an inspired, bittersweet New Order-style dance-pop track that’s as morose as it is curiously uplifting, constantly refreshing itself on that earworm of a guitar hook. From here on out, Love evens out, outfitting those creepy, dead-eyed synthetics in more pop-friendly garb. – Pitchfork

Tuesday 02.16.10: Fat Tuesday Party with OLLIN / LAS CAFETERAS / MENTIRITAS / UPGROUND @ echoplex
Posted by damara - filed in 18+, MP3, echoplex, events
For over 300 years, Mardi Gras has been a tradition in New Orleans that defines a city rich in music and culture. So what does that have to do with bands from LA (most of which hail from East LA)? OLLIN, Mentiritas, Las Cafeteras and Upground are bands that love to party and live to share their music with the masses, that’s what. Several years back party host, Ollin, began to use Fat Tuesday as a means to learn a different style of music and to pay tribute to one of America’s coolest traditions, the music of Mardi Gras. Known for fusing Mexican folk music with rock, Irish, Klezmer and punk, Ollin adds yet another feather to its musical hat by playing some traditional music from the Bayou. Las Cafeteras are pure entertainers. Playing traditional music from Veracruz, Mexico, this female heavy band sings, dances and rocks any stage they come in contact with. Mentiritas is more than a band. Mentiritas (which translates to “little lies”), is a hilarious musical show fronted by the boys from Ozomatli. Their infectious dance grooves are riddled with comedy, insight and mayhem. With members from the Beastie Boys, Cava and Ozo this rare appearance is a perfect addition to the night. Upground has a vibe all its own. From hard grooving Latin soul to high voltage Ska, hips WILL be moving when these East L.A. natives take the stage. This line up is hotter than the sun. Attendees are encouraged to go all out and dress in Mardi Gras colors and costumes; after all, this is fucking Mardi Gras ya’ll.

The Grammy-nominated ‘True Blood’ soundtrack comes alive in a night of music from HBO’s acclaimed series at the Echoplex on January 29. Reflecting the present-day Southern Gothic atmosphere portrayed onscreen, the soundtrack’s haunting song selections lean toward a large helping of roots-oriented, swamp-flooded, Louisiana-influenced sounds; performed by contemporary and classic practitioners of the genre.
Gary Calamar, music supervisor for ‘True Blood,’ says “I am thrilled that we are able to pull together some of the amazing artists who are on the ‘True Blood’ soundtrack for this very special show. And….we are trying to secure some surprise guests as well. It’s going to be badass !”
Out 4 Blood is made possible in part with generous support from Louisiana Entertainment and proudly recognizes Louisiana’s Year of the Song, celebrating the historic contribution of the state’s songs and songwriters.

Wednesday 02.10.10: DUB CLUB presents COURTNEY MELODY / TIPPA LEE @ echoplex
Posted by damara - filed in 21+, Dance Night, echoplex, events
COURTNEY MELODY
with special guest TIPPA LEE
backed by Echodelic Soundsystem
Rough dancehall singer Courtney Melody was born in St. Andrew, Jamaica and began singing from when he attended school. In his early teens he started to work on a local sound system called Black Spider. He started to make a name for himself when he joined the mighty Stereo One sound system, working alongside Lieutenant Stitchie, Ricky Stereo, Boy Blue, Wolfman and Daddy Freddy.
It was Stereo One who released his first 45, an awesome soundboy burial anthem called “Screechy Across The Border”.
Courtney then went to Winston Riley’s Techniques label to voice “How Long Will Your Love Last” and “Exploiter”. These were small hits, but his next effort “Bad Boy” in 1986 propelled this young singer into international dancehall stardom. Courtney Melody then became the hottest artist in reggae music, unleashing a volley of unstoppable dancehall sides such as “Ninja Mi Ninja” and “Tell Dem” for King Tubbys; “Modern Girl” for Robert French; “Put It Down” for Harry J “Downpressor” for Prince Jazzbo; “Rootsman Corner” for Redman; and “Can’t Get We Out” for King Jammy’s. Many of these tunes remain modern-day dancehall classics.
After experiencing a motorbike accident, Courtney was forced to take a long break from the business and little was heard from Courtney throughout the 1990s, with the exception of a superb single for Star Trail called “In The Street”. Riding the “Baltimore” rhythm, this tune proved that Courtney really was a great singer, who given the opportunity and the right rhythm, still produce top quality reggae music.
The 1999 World Clash in New York was a landmark event for Courtney. Japanese sound system Mighty Crown brandished their dubplate special of “Ninja Mi Ninja” which mashed up the dance, helping the Japanese to take the trophy. Tapes of the clash went worldwide and soon every sound had to have their own specials from Courtney Melody. Suddenly his popularity rose and led to Courtney touring overseas and capitalising on his dancehall veteran status.
In 2007 he came out an excellent new album , Serious Business.
We are very excited to Courtney Melody live and direct at the Dub Club, alongside long time Dub Club favorite Tippa Lee, and backed up on the turntables by Echodelic Soundsystem.

Friday 03.05.10: THE APPLESEED CAST / DREAMEND @ echoplex
Posted by damara - filed in 18+, echoplex, events
The Appleseed Cast playing Low Level Owl 1 & 2 in their entirety
Low Level Owl is a supernova and a full redefinition of the band, a sprawling two-disc monster that redirects their ambition from the emotional release of their earlier albums into the meticulous conceptions crafted through endless hours of studio time. Overhauling their sound and incorporating a wide mélange of styles, Low Level Owl goes a long way towards emasculating any of their previous hardcore influences by injecting a thoughtful, gentler Britpop jangle and winsome vocals and harmonies. The result is a mix of elements combining the enterprising studio conceptions of Radiohead with touches of shimmering Stone Roses psychedelia knitted together with the conviction and energetic drumming of the early U2, all draped over a monolithic prog-rock conceptual framework.
The technical execution throughout the album is flawless. The rock tracks are spread evenly across both Low Level Owl discs (which are available separately– Use Your Illusion-style– presumably so as to not overwhelm listeners) and are interspersed with instrumental and ambient tracks that act as connective tissue. Josh Baruth’s fantastic drumming is placed in the front of the mix and propels all of the traditional songs. Each of the tracks are awash in keyboards with the vocals generally lying low in the mix, making the lyrics difficult to decipher. These are the only constants through the entire work as Appleseed Cast takes you on a tour through most of the highlights of 90s pop and rock. – Pitchfork

“Disco assassins for hire” Slash Fiction hit the decks at midnight, for a special ALL-DISCO mashup set! Henry Slash and Mick Fiction are the DJ duo responsible for rockin’ the dance floor at Chinatown’s Full Frontal Disco parties, celebrating disco decadence in its myriad mutations, both classic and contemporary — only this time, they’ll be adding a mashup twist to their signature sound!
And for the Midnight Mashup Show, resident dance crew R.A.I.D. (Random Acts of Irreverent Dance) takes over the stage in all their bizarre, gold-suited glory, for another show-stopping dance performance.

what makes Post-Nothing such a thrill is the manner in which Japandroids hold absolutely nothing back. As contagious as any of the lyrics, melodies, riffs, or drum fills are, their energy and lack of self-consciousness is every bit as equally lovable. Opening mission statement “The Boys Are Leaving Town” could be seen as a goof on Thin Lizzy, but the response, “Will we find our way back home?”, is delivered with such conviction that between those two lines, “Boys” displays a palpable desperation. Six tracks later, the question is still unresolved– amidst the cyclical thrum of “Sovereignty”, they observe: “It’s raining, OH-OH! in Vancouver/ But I don’t give a fuck/ ‘Cause I’m far from home tonight.”
Where it all comes together best is “Young Hearts Spark Fire”. Almost a flipside to LCD Soundsystem’s “All My Friends”, it’s thematically similar, trading wistful reminiscence for drunken defiance and pulsing electro for chaotic garage rock. The five minutes go by in a blur, and amidst the guitar heroics and cymbal-bashing, King lets his guard down on Post-Nothing’s key line– “We used to dream/ Now we worry about dying/ I don’t want to worry about dying.” It would be so easy to view this sort of musical and lyrical directness with suspicion, but “Young Hearts” is life-affirming stuff– if only it affirms that, even in these times, life doesn’t need to be as complicated as we tend to make it. – Pitchfork

You Say Party We Say Die || Listen || Watch
The new album from Canadian new-wavers, You Say Party! We say Die!, simply titled XXXX, falls right into this realm of new millennium pop culture. Their extremely catchy keyboard hooks, combined with raw guitars and vocals filled with a sort of hypnotic angst, pays homage to the era when MTV played nothing but music videos.
Nothing sets the mood more than the dark opener track “There is XXXX (In My Heart),” lead singer Becky Ninkovic sings a tune of heartbreak so sad over a vibraphone keyboard setting that sends chills down your spine. She swears there’s love in her heart, though (I assume, naturally, that XXXX is supposed to be LOVE), and quite suddenly, over a much friendlier pop riff that could be played in the club somewhere. The drums kick everything up for sure with a rhythmic sort of intensity that you can just imagine people in out-of-style clothes jumping to strobe lights. If John Hughes hears this track, he’ll wish he was still making movies about teenagers dealing with hormones and identity crises. – Consequence of Sound

By the Throat is the third release from the MC/DJ pair of Eyedea (Mike Averill) and Abilities (Gregory Keltgen). Since their rap battle days (they won Scribble Jam, Rocksteady, and the Blaze Battle in the late ’90s) they’ve been expanding their sonic palette, and this effort is a further evolution from 2004’s E&A. Abilities uses sounds ranging from rock’n'roll guitars to his trademark turntable work, and Eyedea’s lyrics are as various as ever. In addition to rhyming about loss and addiction, topics as esoteric as neuroscience and quantum physics are addressed. – Prefix

Buffalo, whose real name “is really long, with a hyphen,” he says, is a preternaturally gifted guitarist who crafts swoon-worthy folk-rock full of nooks and crannies, exposed nerves and shimmering soundscapes — think an incipient Neil Young, or a low-fi Mercury Rev, or a lovingly shambolic Wilco. Joined by bandmates Sheridan Riley and Rebecca Coleman (who also attend Millikan High) and Arin Fazio, Buffalo has a growing cadre of Eastside fans and, to no one’s surprise, some interest from record labels. – Buzz Bands

Alfred “Daedelus” Darlington is a proponent of Edwardian dandyism for the Internet age, and his electronic whimsy has been influenced equally by Coldcut’s chopped-up beats and Bernard Herrmann’s orchestral Vertigo. But on Love to Make Music To, the L.A. producer unveils a nocturnal soundtrack toughened up by booty bass (“My Beau”), hardcore techno (the astringent “Hrs:Mins: Secs”), and coked-out club rap (the slurry “Touchtone” with Paperboy and Sa-Ra’s Taz). Daedelus’ furious stylistic shifts are engrossing (if challenging), and when he closes the album with the glowing predawn ballad “You’re the One,” it sounds like hard-won catharsis. – Spin.com

True genius can not be rushed. In the case of the legendary lyricist GZA, time has always been on his side. With Pro Tools, GZA’s latest release and fifth solo album courtesy of renowned indie Babygrande Records, the masterful MC adds yet another lyrically stunning LP to his rich musical catalogue. For the past 15 years, GZA has been stretching the sensibility of modern-day hip-hop with his finely crafted, thought provoking wordplay which he credits to his willingness to delve deep into the written word.
As one of the founding members of the mighty Wu-Tang Clan, GZA’s mic mastery first gained prominence in 1993 with the release of the Clan’s first LP, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). Two years later, GZA released his second solo album, Liquid Swords on Geffen Records which went on to sell over one million copies and earn a platinum plaque. Throughout his various projects with the Wu and classic appearances on other member’s side projects, GZA maintained a reputation as a skilled wordsmith with a highly recognizable and authoritative delivery.

WILLI WILLIAMS
backed by The Expanders
with special guests
David Hillyard of the Slackers on Sax
reggae legend Larry McDonald on percussion
Mr T-Bone (from Italy) on Trombone
plus Jah Faith
Willi Williams is best known as the writer and singer of “Armagideon Time,” a beloved reggae anthem once popularized by The Clash, but over his 40-plus year career, he has contributed consistently to the greater body of Jamaican reggae, collaborating with many of the music’s luminary figures.
After recording “Calling” for Coxson Dodd’s Studio One in 1966, Williams’ career grew steadily as he established the Soul Sounds label in 1969 and produced artists including Delroy Wilson, The Versatiles, and the legendary Barrett Brothers (as Rhythm Force), who would later become the engine of Bob Marley’s band.
Through much of his career, Williams split his time between Kingston, Jamaica and Toronto, Canada, where he formed a close association with Jamaican keyboard legend Jackie Mittoo. Mittoo, perhaps the single most influential musician in Jamaican music history, recorded frequently with Williams in the 70s and contributed significantly to Williams’ outstanding album Messenger Man, released in 1978.
Williams voiced the breakthrough track “Armagideon Time” in 1979. “Jackie Mittoo and myself were working on some projects, and we went to New York and met up with Coxson [Dodd],” Williams recalls. “I had a song at the time that was getting good coverage ['Messenger Man']. [Dodd] heard the song and he wanted to do something with me. He mentioned that when we started out in the early days, he didn’t have enough time and ammunition to work with me how he wanted. So he wanted me to go back into the studio.”
Williams’ original recording of “Armagideon Time” has remained a reggae standard and was included on the comprehensive four-disc set, Tougher Than Tough: The Story of Jamaican Music, released by Mango Records in 1993. “Armagideon Time” also found its way back into popular culture via the 1999 Jim Jarmusch film Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai.
“Armagideon Time” utilized the Studio One backing track known as “Real Rock”,and Willi’s cut of the rhythm helped propel it to become the most “versioned” or recycled in all of reggae history. Punk legends The Clash helped internationalize “Armagideon Time” in 1979 as a b-side to its “London Calling” single and a standard part of its live performances.
Far from being a one-hit wonder, Williams’ reggae career has been substantial and prolific with frequent tours to Europe through the years. His work with singer/producer Yabby You has marked his reputation, as well as his later efforts with dub icon Augustus Pablo. In the 80s, Williams recorded See Me and Natty With A Cause for the London-based soundsystem giant Jah Shaka. In the last few years his classic Messenger Man album was re-released by Blood and Fire records, and many of his early Studio One cuts such as Addis-A Babba have been included on the popular reggae compilations on the Soul Jazz label.
Recently Williams has also overseen the production of Full Time Love, released through M10 Records in France. The set features a live backing band, The Drum Street Crew, and Jamaican keyboardist Bobby Kalphat, another of Williams’ notable musical associates. Full Time Love captures the full-band sound of reggae’s past, but with a contemporary production touch. “When you get that live drum and bass you just hear something that . . . you can’t imitate it with a computer,” says Williams.
For this show at the Dub Club Willi will be backed up by the outstanding local roots band The Expanders , who are known for their devotion to capturing the vintage sound and feel of classic reggae. They will be joined for this gig by an all star cast: David Hillyard plays sax for one of the most popular Ska/rocksteady bands worldwide- The Slackers, Mr T-Bone is the top reggae trombone player from Italy , and Larry McDonald is a legendary reggae percussionist , having played on too many classic albums to count. Joining the band for a few opening tunes on vocals will be the Dub Club’s own Jah Faith, along with a couple originals from The Expanders and some instrumental scorchers from Mr Hillyard+ co. A wicked night of music all around! See you there!

Four Tet || Listen || Watch || MP3
Over the course of a truly inspired career, London’s Four Tet, a.k.a. Kieran Hebden, has remained ahead of the curve, sidestepping obsolescence by folding new strains of sound into his already rich jazz/hip-hop/folk base. Last year’s Ringer EP found Hebden reveling in the hypnotic, developing 10-minute songs that ditched the dissonance of 2005’s Everything Ecstatic in favor of calmer waters and subtler effects. There Is Love In You, his first proper album in five years, is smoother still, and to great effect—if this isn’t the best Four Tet record yet, it’s certainly a fresh face for Hebden.
These songs make no bones about their rhythmic inspiration. Most are four-on-the-floor, built atop recurring samples, but only the single, “Love Cry,” outwardly indulges in Ibiza-flavored house. (Even then, it’s under a dark cloud of dubstep digitalia.) Instead, Hebden does his contemporaries in The Field one better by using repetition as the beginning of the experiment, rather than its final resting place, as if thinking, “The music’s going to move in circles; now, how to interrupt those perfect curves?”
Each song is an exercise in craftsmanship, with the crystalline opener “Angel Echoes” patiently coming into focus, “Circling” starting over halfway through to rebuild with a new set of sounds, and “Sing” finding its pulse in a curious mix of Nintendo glitch and tined instruments—African thumb piano, an open Rhodes organ. Each unfolds into the next gracefully, until “She Just Likes To Fight,” one of the album’s shorter songs at five minutes, closes There Is Love In You. Sleepy as this final song is, it’s the record’s most surprising, beginning with a club beat, then morphing into live post-rock punctuated by hand-smacked percussion. It’s further proof that Hebden is incapable of phoning it in, and that he has plenty more tricks up his sleeve for the coming years. – The AV Club

King Sunny Ade || Watch
There are a few different reasons why you should be excited about the just announced King Sunny Ade concert at the Echoplex on Friday, May 7, which Jason Bentley scooped and announced on Morning Becomes Eclectic this morning. First, if you’re a clumsy dancer and want to steal a few effervescent moves from a master of the understated maneuver, King Sunny is your man. He does these little half-steps and elbow buckles that are incredibly easy, efficient, and very suave — David Byrne owes the King some dance royalties, if there were such a thing.
Second, King Sunny Ade is, along with Fela Kuti, one of the first African artists to make a dent in the American market; in the late 1970s and early 1980s, King Sunny released a few brilliant albums on Island Records that showcased rhythmic “Juju Music,” a funky thing that was rising in Africa. The Nigerian master’s Juju Music stands today as one of the classics of the era, and sounds incredibly fresh nearly 30 years after its release. – LA Weekly

Featuring Carla Bozulich
In the decade since the Geraldine Fibbers, Carla Bozulich’s myriad contributions have culminated in a treasure trove of gems and extraordinary oddities culled from brave reconnaissance into the deep sonic unknown. Evangelista, Bozulich’s first “gospel noise” record on Canadian label Constellation—featuring members of A Silver Mt. Zion and Godspeed You! Black Emperor, as well as instrumentalists Shahzad Ismaily and Nels Cline— impressed and dressed many year-end’s best lists for 2006. Two years later, Evangelista the album morphed into Evangelista the band with the commitment of bassist Tara Barnes and sonic landscaper Dominic Cramp, resulting in the much-lauded release Hello Voyager. Evangelista’s latest recording, Prince of Truth, takes this evolution one psychic step further, like a lucid trip into the darkest recesses of the unconscious mind—a realm free from the formal constraints of traditional compositional structure, comprised of surreal theta ruminations and random outbursts of kinetic energy. This harrowing work of ethereal beauty would be at home in a playlist featuring Rachel’s, Amber Asylum, and late SWANS/World of Skin. – LA Record

Wednesday 12.09.09: DUB CLUB presents JOHNNY CLARKE @ echoplex
Posted by damara - filed in 21+, Dance Night, echoplex, events
This show is one that all of us Dub Club selectors are really excited about. If you have ever come to the Dub Club over the past 9 years, chances are pretty good that you heard a Johnny Clarke tune being spun. “Rock With Me” , King of the Arena” , Rockers Time” , “Bloood Dunza” , the list of hits is endless. As they say on the excellent Johnny Clarke fan website http://raresounds.co.uk/: During the years 1975 – 1981, Bob Marley and the Wailers gained their huge international audience and three singers ruled the Jamaican Dancehall – Dennis Brown, Gregory Issacs and Johnny Clarke. Today, Johnny Clarke is still the least known internationally.
He is a giant in Jamaican Music and we are thrilled to finally have him at the Dub Club.
Check out the raresounds website listed above for more info about Johnny Clarke.

Fruit Bats || Listen || Watch
Fruit Bats were greeted by a very house when they hit the stage. They opened with a song from 2005’s Spelled in Bones, “Canyon Girl”, and then played a few newer songs, but not before bandleader Eric Johnson asked for permission first, saying “We’ll play some old shit, I promise” and joking that they would “play all four albums in a row, plus a mystery album of your choosing.” After a solid set of newer songs (some of which they also performed during KEXP’s Bay Area broadcast), they pulled out a few revamped classics, such as “Seaweed” (with added harmonica) and “The Little Acorn.” They followed up with a few more new songs that were equally impressive. Behind Eric Johnson’s distinctive voice, a change in style was prevalent in the new music. Although he never gives up the band’s signature pop and twang elements, the songs were a bit more sprawling and mined a similar vein of classic rock as Grand Archives and before that Neil Young. Fruit Bats finished with a couple of classics, including “The Rainbow Sign” and “When U Love Somebody.” It was a great show, and we’re looking forward to the next time Fruit Bats hit town… and to the new album we hope to see later this year! – KEXP

Tuesday 11.10.09: Aquarium Drunkard presents BISHOP ALLEN / THROW ME THE STATUE / DARWIN DEEZ @ echoplex
Posted by samantha - filed in All Ages, echo, echoplex, events, new showBishop Allen || Listen || Watch
Bishop Allen has broken through to a larger audience than any Brooklyn DIY power-pop duo could be expected to, first by landing the twinkly song “Click, Click, Click, Click” in a camera commercial, then by belting out the ferociously catchy “Middle Management” in the movie Nick And Norah’s Infinite Playlist. The band’s third LP, Grrr…, is designed to appeal to fans of those two semi-hits; it’s a record full of explosive percussion, scratchy guitars, and fragments of melody that bandleaders Justin Rice and Christian Rudder repeat until they wear down listeners’ resistance. Much of Grrr… ventures pretty far into the cutesy—as the album’s title suggests—but more often than not, Rice and Rudder’s strong rock-sense gives Bishop Allen’s songs enough kick to overcome their cloying elements. And the pair have a knack for super-charged ditties like “Oklahoma,” “Rooftop Brawl,” and “Cue The Elephants” that can make any given three minutes of the day feel a lot happier. -A.V. Club

Vic Chesnutt Band || Listen || MP3
featuring Fugazi’s Guy Picciotto, members of Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Silver Mt. Zion
As on 2007’s North Star Deserter, Chesnutt is here joined by members of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and Thee Silver Mount Zion Memorial Orchestra, as well as Fugazi’s Guy Picciotto. Together they build a sound that walks a line between country-folk, Southern soul, and post-rock, which works because the music’s uncertainty about its identity often mirrors Chesnutt’s own doubt. Opener “Coward” deals in dread and aggression with its crawling tempo and doom-laden, harmonized guitar outbursts.
There are a couple of welcome leavening moments– the bright organ and Leslie cabinet guitar of “Concord Country Jubilee” chief among them– but At the Cut is foremost a dark album, and about as far tonally and sonically as Chesnutt has been from 2003’s highly polished Silver Lake. The restraint of the musicians involved leaves Chesnutt’s fragility at the center of the music and lends the album an air of refinement and wisdom that could have easily been drowned out by guitarists more eager to call attention to themselves. – Pitchfork

We are happy to welcome back our resident skate guards, MIKE BEE & STEVE 1DER, to lace you with that crazy juice.
We also have a very special guest, a D&D veteran from the east coast, DJ Royale, from Philly. Now Im sure Royale is devestated by the Phillies lose so this is gonna be a good opportunity to put that lose, and the cold weather, behind him and backwards skate!!!
The Los Angeles event is set apart from Down and Derby parties in other cities by its authentic 70s feel. The resident DJs don’t just spin popular tunes for which the era has become known—they reach into the depths of 70s music to bring partiers the obscure hits that may not be recognizable by most, but are truly indicative of the culture and lifestyle of the era.
Down and Derby, is a retro-inspired roller-skating party created and designed to give attendees a unique nightlife experience. The interactive throwback events combine décor reminiscent of a 70s roller disco with attendees participating through wearing fashion attire evocative of the era. DJs known for pushing the limits of mixing and music production are procured, adding vibrant energy to the event with both underground and popular mixes.
The entry fee is $5 with RSVP, $10 at the door and quad skates of every size will be available to rent for another $5. Guests are welcome to bring their own roller skates to the event.

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble are a family, literally. They are the heirs to the great musical tradition of Chicago. Their father Phil Cohran trained them from age three to play hard, fast and together. They boast a fan base as wide and eclectic as Barack Obama, David Byrne, Q-Tip, Jay-Z, Erykah Badu, Jools Holland and thousands more. Now with the news that they along with Mos Def and drummer extraordinaire Tony Allen will form the new Gorillaz outfit, you realize that this is no ordinary collective.
By the end of the nineties, with everyone out of school, they concentrated on their music full time. With a mix of their jazz roots and their hip-hop sensibility, they made a living for themselves on the streets of Chicago. While performing on a subway platform, they stumbled upon their name when a man who watched them for hours, missing train after train, proclaimed that he has been “hypnotized” by their music. With their composer skills aiding them to create a sound wholly their own, the group moved to New York City where they played with Mos Def and Erykah Badu.
From a chance encounter in November of 2005, and support from numerous artists, the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble has released an album brimming with musical magic. Recorded on the back of the Africa Express trip to Lagos last October, during a three-day stop-over in London, with the drummer’s stool shared by Malcolm Catto from the The Heliocentrics, Sola Akingbola from Jamiroquai, and the one and only Tony Allen, and other musical luminaries Flea and Paul Simenon, this album is all that is cracked up to be and more.

Posted by damara - filed in 18+, echoplex, events
Dead Meadow || Listen || Watch
Stoner-rock avatars Dead Meadow have slimmed down to a power trio, but their fat, rubbery sound hasn’t lost any of its bluesy bombast in the process. They seem oblivious to the passage of time, still riding the heavy train that Iron Butterfly, Cream, Sir Lord Baltimore, and Hawkwind set in motion. That doesn’t mean they’re oblivious for the need for new product, though—their most recent studio album is still last year’s Old Growth, but they’re working on an old-fashioned feature-length concert film called Three Kings. (They’ve moved from Washington, D.C., to Los Angeles, so maybe they think they have to make a movie now.) There’s a trailer up on their MySpace page, and I’m getting a distinct Song Remains the Same vibe, probably mostly from the footage of the band wandering around in hooded druid robes. Despite all the vintage-colored self-indulgence and the whiffs of 70s hippie neopagan cheesiness, Dead Meadow’s hazy, smoky, languidly violent music can achieve an eerie beauty that transcends era, and onstage they’re a fiercely disciplined rock machine—in other words, don’t hold your breath for a dwarf trampling a miniature Stonehenge. – Chicago Reader

For Alan Palomo, reflecting on the music of the Reagan era has a personal component. The Texas-reared Mexico native’s dad, Jorge, was a bit of a Spanish-language pop star in the late 1970s and early 80s. The analog electronics of that bygone period echo throughout the younger Palomo’s increasingly promising previous recordings, whether with former band Ghosthustler (he wore the Power Glove in the video for their “Parking Lot Nights”) or, more recently, on VEGA’s Well Known Pleasures EP. Finally, working with Brooklyn-based visual collaborator Alicia Scardetta as Neon Indian, Palomo has brought all the best of 2009’s summer sounds– bedroom production, borrowed nostalgia, unresolved sadness, deceptively agile popcraft– together on a single album.
Whatever they owe to the past, the memories on Psychic Chasms are Palomo’s and ours. Soft vocals recalling You Made Me Realise-era Kevin Shields. Italo-disco synth arpeggios. Hall & Oates drum sounds. Divebombing video-game effects. Brittle guitar distortion. Manipulated tapes that bend the notes the way Shields’ “glide guitar” did, the way bluesmen’s fret fingers did. Field recordings of birds. Oohing and ahhing backing vocals. And samples, on at least two songs, of the elder Palomo, whose electro-rock approach was quite similar. All combine on eight or nine unforgettable songs and a few tantalizingly brief interludes, indelibly capturing the glamor and bleary malaise of being young and horny as an empire devours itself.
Like a low-rent Daft Punk, Palomo takes what 1990s rock fans probably would’ve considered cheesy– LinnDrum and Oberheim rhythms, Chromeo-plated electro-funk Korg riffs, processed party-vocal samples– and not only makes them part of a distinct artistic vision, but also keeps them fun. Quick opener “(AM)” is rife with detail, as an indecipherable tenor floats over a mock-dramatic drum fill and 8-bit star cruisers do battle against twinkling fairy dust. Another sub-minute interstitial track, “(If I Knew, I’d Tell You)”, keeps its secrets to itself, letting multiple melodic synth lines hint at a gulf-sized pool of melancholy over a tape-altered rhythm track. “Laughing Gas”, at slightly more than a lyric-less minute and a half, is the one that ruins my attempted distinction between songs and interludes, with bongo drums, robot vocal samples, and euphoric giggles straight out of those Air France kids’ dreams. The cumulative result is a meltdown-deadened but deliriously inventive perspective on pop. – Pitchfork

Interestingly, The Future Will Come occasionally reminds the listener of that other musical trend, the re-reading of the ’80s. Tracks such as the deceptively simple One Day and A New Bot could easily fit onto Metronomy’s album or La Roux’s forthcoming debut. With sometime LCD Soundsystem cohort Nancy Whang delivering clipped, almost deadpan vocals, some tracks here bring to mind the Human League (particularly The Station), a connection cemented by MacLean claiming to have listened to Dare constantly for inspiration.
Whilst most dance acts begin to test a listener’s patience by the sixth minute, MacLean seems to revel in drawing a song out, building layer upon layer and then stripping all the elements away again. Eight-minute opener The Simple Life is a case in point, a synthetic drum beat and undulating keyboard riff playing out the opening four minutes until Whang finally appears to deliver the phrase “Now You’re Gone” ad infinium. It’s a mesmeric, utterly addictive opener.
Elsewhere, Happy House, originally released last year, closes the album in style with 12 minutes of intricate percussion, organ stabs and a deliciously retro rave keyboard riff that would make even the greyest businessman throw shapes.
The Future Will Come is the kind of album you could listen to loudly in a club, or at home with some headphones and it would suit either. Welcome back intelligent dance music, we’ve missed you. – MusicOMH

Russian Circles || Listen || Watch || Mp3
It may share its name with another second city, but the third LP from the Russian Circles calls to mind a fairly famous quote from one of their hometown’s favorite sons. “Chicago is an October sort of city even in spring,” Nelson Algren wrote, and Geneva’s an October sort of album no matter when you put it on. Geneva feels very much like the city its members hang their hats: rusty and steely and shifty, overcast and a little cold, and– Algren again– “battle-colored.” It evokes a long early morning’s drive down the length of any one of Chicago’s city-spanning north-south thoroughfares, blowing through both industrial grit and beatific parkways, eyes peeled for crumbling facades and flashes of chrome and the not-so-occasional pothole.
There were signposts to Geneva all over the spiny, immediate Enter and last year’s prettier, driftier Station, but on their third go, the Circles are clearing a path all for themselves. Debts are still due to genre godheads like Mogwai and Slint, for certain, but like the best work of their obvious forebears, on Geneva the Circles have found a way to make three guys in a room sound like a lot more than three guys in a room. Credit where credit’s due: a great deal of Geneva’s success lies in the string work of cellist Allison Chesley and violinist Susan Voelz, who add a resonant depth to many of the record’s best moments, filling in the gaps around these insistent compositions with a kind of sweeping gothic grime. But even without the hired hands, Russian Circles are penning limber, purpose-driven tunes, then playing the hell out of them. And, in their structure and execution both, this is doubtless their finest work yet. – Pitchfork

“‘Tijuana Sound Machine’ is both folk music friendly and alien/outer space driven, as electronic freaky as anything by Bjork, Radiohead, or Aphex Twin. If anything, the album is wildly innovative, the first salvo in what may become a global electronic revolution… The music is simply irresistible. Never mind hip-hop, ‘Tijuana Sound Machine’ will truly take a nation of millions to hold it back.”

Sunday 11.15.09: Part Time Punks Presents MISSION OF BURMA / THE HENRY CLAY PEOPLE @ echo
Posted by damara - filed in 18+, echoplex, eventsMission of Burma || Listen || Watch
In their first go-round in the early 1980s, Mission of Burma were equal parts innovation and perspiration. Their muscular post-punk was groundbreaking, but it also had a workman-like quality. Maybe that’s what made them unique– Roger Miller, Clint Conley, and Peter Prescott always had their noses to the grindstone even when they were being visionary. Since reforming in 2002, Burma haven’t been nearly as pioneering. But their hard-toiling side has not only persisted, it has expanded to fill in the gap.
Of their three post-reunion albums so far, The Sound the Speed the Light sounds the most industrious, the most like another day at the office. There’s nothing surprising here, and some songs are so signature-styled you might wonder if you’ve heard them before. But when it comes to office work, Burma’s day beats most bands’ years. So the lack of surprise also means a lack of flaws, and a lot of energy and power. When these guys punch the clock, they take the phrase literally.
So yet another Burma album hits the ground running, this time with “1,2,3 Partyy!”, a seriously fun song about how funny it is that someone would take partying seriously. That energy spills into “Possession”, which swings between weight-lifting pound and a wistful chorus, with lots of Miller guitar grit in between. Later, Conley’s bass melodies and half-spoken lyrics turn “Forget Yourself” into a thoughtful semi-ballad. By time the anthemic “SSL 83″ carries the record to its halfway point, it’s been six straight unimpeachable tunes, forming an album side that rivals any Burma album side. – Pitchfork

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit || Listen || Watch
The 400 Unit sounds a lot more cohesive; even more so it sounds relaxed. Isbell co-produced the record with Centro-matic’s Matt Pence in between road dates. In listening to the eleven tracks, there is no question that this is a Muscle Shoals record. While the debut may have been tainted by the dark days of the A Blessing And A Curse-era DBT, The 400 Unit finds Isbell rejuvenated and eager to move on. A number of the songs seem to address his personal and professional splits with his old band, whether it be the wistful “Cigarettes and Wine” or the more acidic “Sunstroke”. Both moods are handled with a practiced ease. As happens in the Muscle Shoals tradition, The 400 Unit features keys, in this case in the form of Derry deBorga (ex-Son Volt), and that steamy Southern vibe really makes The 400 Unit shine. The sultry organ and soulful vocals set Isbell and band apart from the current gang of reverb-obsessed Americana folkers. Isbell and company have released one hell of a record. If there is any justice in this world, 2009 should see The 400 Unit making waves on the level of tour titans DBT and Lucero. – Tripwire

Trannyshack, San Francisco’s infamous drag performance night club, shocked and delighted packed audiences every Tuesday night at midnight for over twelve years. Defying all expectations, Trannyshack incorporated everything from low brow trash to high brow performance art, and became famous (or, infamous) worldwide as the quintessential San Francisco experience. No visit to the City was complete without a stop at Trannyshack. The club has been featured in Out (which named it one of the top 10 reasons to move to San Francisco), Genre, Instinct, and Paper magazines and won numerous Best of the Bay awards, and was filmed for an independent feature length documentary , titled “Filthy Gorgeous: The Trannyshack Story” . Trannyshack is now branching out it’s empire, with shows in LA, London, Waikiki, Seattle, Portland, New Orleans, and Reno enjoying great success.

Monday 10.26.09: OLIN AND THE MOON / MICHAEL RUNION @ echoplex
Posted by damara - filed in 21+, echoplex, events, free show
Three Idaho boys bring their rural charm to the Los Angeles scene with a little help from a pretty face along the way. Olin and the Moon’s self-titled album is a promising start for these old friends as they attempt to stand out from the crowd they’ve chosen to surround themselves with.
Drummer Marshall Vore allows the band to reside confidently in between the overtly fast and the unconsciously mellow, while singer David LaBrel shines with storytelling skills that stand up to the likes of Bright Eye’s Conor Oberst. Invoking images of a rock star retiring to the moon, “Moon Man” is like a monotone ballad version of “Ziggy Stardust.” In “Home,” the band conjures up fond memories of simple farm life protecting innocent love: “I wanna take you to the trees / Where the forest and the farm lands meet … Where you can lay out on the grass all day / Where it is safe.” Songs like these benefit from acoustic guitar strums, heavenly bells and sweet piano undertones.
Tracks like “Oh Bells” and “Song of the Summer” are focused more around the band’s own experiences on the road as musicians, referencing sound guys and getting drunk while singing. Olin and the Moon’s adolescent drive comes via David LaBrel’s brother Travis and his powerful lead guitar. His chord formations draw in ears to his trickling melodies — most notably on “Changin’“ and “Take It To Hell” — but they often overtake the songs, drowning out Erica Wheeler’s bass and David LaBrel’s vocals.
Olin and the Moon desperately strive to engage listeners in music that expresses their love for the art form; with an album like this, they just might succeed. – Performer Mag

The head of Kid Sister’s long-awaited album is finally reaching the end of the birth canal: It’s a girl, her name is Ultraviolet and she’s finally coming out October 6 on Downtown Records.
Months of rapid anticipation, encouraged by Kid Sis’s adorable Twitter-ing (“Ew my nails look crazy. I look like I raze barns for a living…”) and ridiculous live performances, have crested to make this one of the year’s most exciting album drops. The buzz from her 2007 single, “Pro Nails,” feat. Kanye West has only grown as Kid Sister keeps on her performing grind and stays real with her fans, delaying her own album release just to get every detail perfect. I smell a classic in the oven.
In addition to Kid Sister’s already infectious flow, I personally can’t wait to check out the production on the album, coming from hard-hitters like Rusko, XXXChange, Herve, and DJ Gant-Man. Don’t sleep on Chicago’s most fully-fitted female rapper this fall! – The Tripwire

Liam Finn + Eliza Jane || Listen
Liam Finn calls his beard “well-traveled” for a good reason. Over the past year alone, the troubadour performed over 180 times at venues far from his New Zealand abode, opening for The Black Keys, Pearl Jam and Wilco. Yet Finn’s most impressive venture to date has not been to any geographical location, but past the barriers of a comfort zone. Although he considered his former Betchadupa bandmates his closest friends, Finn kept to himself the songs he had written of heartbreak and evictions, ultimately the reason why 2008’s I’ll Be Lightning became a solo record. But Finn has since opened up to a born-again collaborator, with his involvement in father Neil’s 7 Worlds Collide project and an EP he created with fellow folk vocalist Eliza-Jane Barnes. What they created, recently released on Sept. 1, was Champagne in Seashells. Fresh from working on 7 Worlds Collide in April, Finn called forth new anxieties that coalesce in the EP’s first track, “Plane Crash.” A self-created nightmare in slow motion, the song spends more than half of its time building up tension through a rumble of broken chords, before exploding into a storm cloud of guitar noise. – Paste Magazine

“Hold my hand while everything blows away, and we will run to a brand new sun,” Jason Lytle sings in his high, scratchy voice. That sense of willed optimism rising out of catastrophe could be about the end of a band, a romance, a friendship, an economic boom or all of them at once, and it runs through the songs on “Yours Truly, the Commuter” (Anti-), Mr. Lytle’s first solo album after 15 years of leading Grandaddy. Mr. Lytle moved to Bozeman, Mont., and recorded the album by himself, playing all the instruments. It’s a fragile recollection of California rock from more auspicious times, with stately melodies and vocal chorales over jerry-built foundations: elegies for vanished certainties. – NY Times

Papa Michigan (born Anthony Fairclough) and General Smiley (born Erroll Bennett) were among the first dual-toasters on the Jamaican scene. Beginning in the late ’70s while still in school, the humorous duo (Smiley got his name because he never smiles) scored immediately with “Rub a Dub Style” and “Nice up the Dance,” two ubiquitous songs on the dancehall circuit. “One Love Jam Down” became a popular anthem, and 1982’s “Diseases” established them as major stars, especially at the annual Sunsplash festivals.

Tuesday 11.03.09: LUCERO “RAMBLIN’ ROADSHOW AND MEMPHIS REVUE” with JACK OBLIVIAN / JOHN PAUL KEITH & THE ONE FOUR FIVES @ echoplex
Posted by damara - filed in 18+, echoplex, events
Back when Lucero played warehouses and released scrappy attic recordings on hand-packaged LPs, the Memphis band felt like an epiphany. Granted, Lucero wasn’t the first group to smash punk zeal into country-rock tradition, but it was the best at the time, and did so on wholly punk-rock terms. Ten years on, the group has released 1372 Overton Park, its major-label debut. Not only is it a sonic leap for Lucero, it’s another epiphany: Having long outgrown the warehouse, leader Ben Nichols and crew have embraced their legendary Memphis forebears by adding a robust horn section (courtesy of Memphis soul legend Jim Spake) and an epic sweep on par with Lucero’s closest cousin, Drive-By Truckers. Overton’s tracks cover Nichols’ typically gravely domain—anthemic barnburners like “Sounds Of The City” to twang-laden weepers like “Can’t Feel A Thing”—but there’s also stomping Southern boogie on “The Devil And Maggie Chascarillo,” a raucous homage to Los Bros Hernandez’s Love And Rockets comics, and a newfound brassy punch that recalls everything from Stax classics to The Replacements’ Pleased To Meet Me. – AV Club

Ranking Joe
Backed by Echodelic Soundsystem
So, Who Is Ranking Joe? Born Joseph Jackson, in Kingston, Jamaica , July 1, 1959, he was introduced in the music business at Tarrant Junior Secondary School in Kingston. Joe performed at school concerts and won local talent contest in the mid-70’s. At age 15, he went to the legendary “Studio One” to audition and what resulted was his first big hit “GUN COURT”, produced by Clement”Coxsone” Dodd under the name “Little Joe”.
“This recording lead to more producers becoming interested in My work and as a result I performed more records for different producers such as Bunny Lee,to name a few.” Some of these records are “OLD TRADITION” done by Bunny Lee, “HONDA 750″ done by Pete Weston. “PSALM 54″ and “JACKET” with Watty Burnett, “STOP YOUR COMING AND COME”, done by Sly and Robbie , “NATTY BMW” with Bunny Diamond, and “SHINE EYE GIRL” and “NATTY NEVER GET WEARY” done on Sonia Pottinger’s famous “HIGH NOTE” label. As he grew older, still into a young man, he changed his name on the advice of Prince Tony Robinson to “Ranking Joe”. Joe worked alongside Robinson and had hit records such as”A YOU Mr. FINNIGAN”,with an album of the same name. He was then was then introduced to the King of DJ’s “U-Roy”, after which he worked on U-Roy’s “KING STUR-GAV HI-FI”, the most popular sound system in Jamaica at that time.
“I later developed my original style of fast rapping. , tongue twisting and that became the most popular thing to hit the airways. The style was (Bang-didlly), also used by “Heavy D”, an American Rapper”. Joe’s string of successes kept rolling. “After an introduction to the producer Joe Gibbs,I did several singles for his label, such as”LEAVE FE ME Girl Arlene” and “Bald Head Bridge” done by the group “CULTURE” and Myself.” The latter was released as a disco 12″ 45 record-one of the wicked extended mixes of the “rockers” period of the late 70’s. “In 1977, I was voted the most popular DJ of that year, for my records that were on the charts and my performance of “KING STUR-GAV” sound system. In 1978-79 I was approached by “Henry ‘Junjo” laws for the “Volcano Label”, the top producer during that time. I recorded an album titled “Saturday Night Jamdown Style” , which was released by Greensleeves in France and VP Records in New York and as a result were successful”.
After moving to New York ,Joe released many records on his own label “Ranking Joe International” and continued to perform all over the world ,traveling to Israel, New Zealand and Brazil as well as Europe. He is one of the few DJs from his era who has continued to release strong new recordings, and has worked with many talented musicians. He was featured on the popular “Dub Side of the Moon” album by the Easy Star All Stars, as well as recordings by The Slackers and Mungo’s Hi-Fi.

When Built To Spill wanted to find out what their music sounded like they locked themselves in Doug Martsch’s garage. Without a tentative conclusion or even a hypothesis the four members began to experiment. Their collaborative efforts lasted seasons and yielded dozens of hours of ADAT tape. The album You In Reverse documents the newest branch of Built To Spill’s chaotic, yet elegant evolution. Rather than Doug’s former reliance on extensive overdubs, the group tried to capture loose and live moments, letting each individual musician’s talents be more accurately represented. Instead of a broad, atmospheric sweep, this record sounds natural. It resonates with relationships, the way the band as a whole responds to music and to each other.

The Black Heart Procession || Listen
More than just a return to numerical album titles, Six is The Black Heart Procession’s first album to be written and recorded simultaneously with a new Three Mile Pilot album. As both bands now coexist for the first time ever, coconspirators Pall Jenkins and Tobias Nathaniel have steered The Black Heart Procession into a darker, more adventurous direction. Produced and recorded by the band over the past couple years, Six is without a doubt the group’s most emotionally resonant album since Three. Brimming with pitch-black ballads of discarded loves and forgotten souls, the album paints a bleak yet strangely comforting portrait of heartbreak, self-destruction and religious allegory over some of their most inspired songs to date, drawing a clear line from here to soulstirring visionaries such as Leonard Cohen, Johnny Cash and Tom Waits.

Vaud & The Villains || Listen || Watch
Vaud & his ragtag band of villains are on the run from the long arm again. This time, they’ve landed just up river from the Creseent City. They come there to find Big Daddy’s…a speako disguised as a church. They are more at home in a dark, back room rollin’ dice and making music than in the schoolhouse or in the stockyards. They’re a bit on the wild side but they won’t hurt you none. The boys play with dynamite and the girls like to buck and bite. But you don’t have to worry. They like new folks. They got a reputation for being mean as a snake, and as sweet as an apple on Christmas day. They got scruples but they often misplace ‘em. They are everything your mama and papa warned you about and they are every bad thing that feels so good to do. If you got a secret, if you’re someone good who’s ever done something bad, if you got the man standing over you every day squeezin’ every ounce of spirit out of you…you have some villain in you. See what they do is they rock you 1930s style. They got a smokin’ hot horn section, leggy dames to match, rock steady rhythm, and soaring gospel harmonies. They are not your grandma’s depression era revival show, they are a big, bad, bawdy, good time band. They are gonna fill up the speako with music and spirit and noise…and you gonna bring the noise. And at the end of the night, when you are burning with the fever they’ve left you with…you’re gonna go out in the world and villainize it. You’re never gonna be the same.

Thursday 09.17.09: DOWN AND DERBY ROLLER DISCO / Skate Lessons with BLADE @ echoplex
Posted by damara - filed in 18+, Dance Night, echoplex, events

Down and Derby, the premier roller skating organization that has quickly garnered a loyal following in cities like Las Vegas, Pittsburgh and New York City will host its second Los Angeles event at The Echoplex, Thursday, July 30. Resident skate guard DJs Thee Mike B and Steve 1Der will control the roller disco rink’s turntables, broadcasting amplified sounds for the eight-wheeled revelers.

Stealing thunder so you move that ass, the duo dubbed Thunderheist unleashes serious electrocrunk boom bap. Ribcage-rattling bass breaks laced with proper rhyming are flipped with digital booty bass, 80s-inspired electronic pop and slowed down Southern bounce, all fresh-dipped in serious swagger.
MC and singer Isis and producer Grahmzilla know how to bring it. And once they’ve brought it, it stays brung.
“Toronto’s shit-hot electro duo” (NME.com) are already a huge online phenomenon, but this first full taste of their forthcoming album comes courtesy of Nasty Mix Records in Canada. Catchy, propulsive, ecstatic and uncompromising, it’s party music of the highest order, utterly unique but sounding like its been in your head all along.

THE RAINCOATS
Formed in 1977, The Raincoats were the world’s second all-girl punk band. Only, by the time Rough Trade released their debut album in 1979, they weren’t making punk music any more, but post-punk, and more akin to The Velvet Underground’s first LP or the records it shared the racks with: The Slits’ “Cut,” Young Marble Giants “Colossal Youth” and The Cure’s first LP. The only reason the band remains lesser known is that their three albums remained out of print for more than a decade before Kurt Cobain tracked them down during a pilgrimage to London in the early 90s. Cobain was also responsible for “convincing” his label, Geffen, to reissue The Raincoats three albums in 1993 (co-writing the liner notes with Kim Gordon), which paved the way for the Riot Grrrl movement.
SECTION 25 (Factory Records)
Dismissed by many journalists in the post-punk era as clones of their labelmates, Joy Division, the band has since been recognized in the highest echelon of Post-Punk innovation, alongside Public Image Limited, Wire and…well…Joy Division, for fusing punk with psychedelia and the surging motorik rhythms of Krautrock bands like Can, Faust and Neu.

Vieux Farka Toure || Listen || Watch || MP3
Word to the wise: get on board the Vieux Farka Touré bandwagon now. Not so you can be hip or prepared to drop his name at a cocktail party (for one thing, no one would listen to this music at a cocktail party, and more importantly, who goes to cocktail parties?) or for any reason that would behoove Starbucks to put this disc in their stores. No, the best reason to acquaint yourself with Vieux Farka Touré is because he is a surpassingly brilliant young musician who, if we are fortunate, has a long and productive career ahead of him.
It has only taken a few years, and two albums, for Vieux Farka Touré to distance himself from what could (and should) have been an overwhelming impression made by his father, Ali Farka Touré. The elder Touré, who passed on in 2006, was a living legend from Mali whose music delineated the natural but often overlooked link between traditional African music and American blues.
Fondo finds Vieux treading the natural bridge his father built between Malian music and Delta blues. Where Ali’s work, particularly his earlier albums, ceaselessly caused the listener to marvel at the common ground between the two continents, Vieux invokes and recalls the connection, but often strains to do more with both sound and tempo.
Fondo is the unequivocal announcement of a major talent, and the well-earned accolades are easy to predict. This constitutes the second consecutive triumph for Vieux Farka Touré: this is not world music so much as music from the world, and certain parts of the world we don’t hear or see as often as we should. Mostly, Fondo is the sound of a son escaping his father’s shadow, even as he shrewdly embraces many of the best elements that made his old man so memorable. – Popmatters

Friday 10.09.09: A Special Acoustic Performance from JOHN DOE AND EXENE / KID CONGO POWERS @ echoplex
Posted by damara - filed in 18+, echoplex, events
John and Exene, who took the stage in simple, black-and-white outfits, looked a little bit like the Appalachian folkies who inspire their music. Although their romance ended nearly 25 years ago, the pair retains a certain chemistry and tenderness that comes through in their patient, funny onstage banter. And, before we get into the music, there’s something else you should know about John and Exene: Their fans — from 20-somethings to 50-year-old punks — adore them. Not a moment of silence could pass without someone yelling, “We love you, Exene!” or good-naturedly joking with John.
As someone who’s devoted a lot of time to thinking about X — I just submitted a 33 1/3 proposal on Los Angeles — the performance was a chance to reflect on the way their music has evolved over the years. Although the road from punk to Americana seems long, the movements are tied together by the raucousness of rockabilly. And the space between the sex, drugs, and death that fueled LA punk and the sex-booze-death triumvirate that has driven American roots music for a century has never been that great. As it turns out, the California noir and Southern gothic aesthetics may just be kissin’ cousins.
For much of the set, John’s acoustic guitar was the only instrument accompanying their voices, as they paged through a selection of each musician’s own compositions, a handful of covers, and a sprinkling of X classics. Throughout, John and Exene kept the audience engaged. John joked about his excitement to contribute a track (“The Losing Kind”) to a Samuel L. Jackson movie and the disappointment of discovering just how bad Black Snake Moan turned out to be. As Doe put it, “Even Christina Ricci running around in her underpants couldn’t save it.” And before performing the Carter Family standard “Poor Old Heartsick Me,” they told the story of their chance meeting with June Carter, who apparently told them, “If I never sing that song again, it’ll be too soon.”
Of course, for an old X fan, the highlight of the evening was hearing two of my favorite old-school tunes, “I Must Not Think Bad Thoughts” and “In This House That I Call Home.” During the second encore (that’s right, kids — both about to turn 53 and still gracing audiences with multiple encores), a few people shouted out, “Los Angeles!”
“On an acoustic guitar? Really?” John shot back, without missing a beat. I knew he was right, but I couldn’t fault them for the request. Even on an acoustic guitar, I would’ve liked to hear it, too. – Tiny Mix Tapes

Southern Culture on the Skids || Listen || Watch
Friday night’s Southern Culture on the Skids show at the Gothic Theatre left a mark on Denver, as they used down-home country pickin’, grinnin’ (and just the right amount of fried chicken) to lead a packed house to hillbilly stomping glee. The venue became a back woods hoe-down as frontman Rick Miller and his cohorts strung together a set of pure white-trash-in-a-blue-collar fun, with silver tongue deftly planted in cheek.
From the first strums of the opening number, Miller mixed surf, punk and country guitar wizardry with slack-jaw wit as he sang his half of the songs. Bassist (and heartbreaking truck stop beauty queen) Mary Huff belted out her share of the set in strong, sultry vocals from beneath a nearly Marge Simpson-sized, red bouffant wig, forming a no-nonsense rhythm section, and the core of funk behind the band’s shimmy-groove, with drummer Dave Hartman and touring rhythm guitarist Tim Barnes.
The quartet successfully mixed humor and sexual innuendo with the perfect amount of schtick, and ended up sounding anything but camp. Huff, decked out in white go-go boots, shining gold nylons, a miniskirt and what looked like a 7-11 clerk’s zippered uniform shirt, adjusted her makeup between almost every song. As she introduced the Wanda Jackson classic “Funnel of Love,” she also drew down the zipper on her blouse and adjusted her bra, preparing both herself and the audience for its saucy sensuality. – Denver Post

This month, Bootie is proud to present the return of LA’s own DJ Axel, creator of the infamous bootleg CD “Breakin’ The Law,” and most recently, producer of the track “Push It Fergasonic,” from the soundtrack for the movie “17 Again,” notable for being one of the first-ever, legally-cleared, multi-label mashups.
Resident mashup mixer DJ Paul V. will be joining him on the decks, and for the Midnight Mashup Show, Anna Konda will be performing as Lady Gaga … exactly 15 months after the REAL Lady Gaga graced the stage at Bootie LA back in June of last year!
Launched in 2003, Bootie was the first club night in the United States dedicated solely to the burgeoning artform of the bootleg mashup — and is now the biggest mashup event in the world, with monthly parties in eight cities on three continents. Mixing and matching every conceivable musical genre, era, and style into one big dance party where everyone feels welcome, Bootie provides the soundtrack for the A.D.D. generation — with free mashup CDs given away like candy!
Bootie’s resident DJs keep your brain guessing and body dancing with creative song combinations, celebrating — and satirizing — the many different forms of music. Bootie showcases the best in mashup productions from around the globe and delivers them on the dance floor … because one song at a time just isn’t enough!

Many were taken aback when longtime Legendary Pink Dot Ryan Moore entered the yawning chasm of dub music. But they were far from disappointed with the results. Moore seized upon the analog implements of Caribbean technology and created mammoth, concave exercises in the echo chamber. His unique, thunderous sounds avoid the two fatal mistakes of contemporary dub practitioners-attempting to mimic King Tubby’s lo-fi aesthetic, and using racks of digital gear that result in dub “lite” (is there anything worse?). If you want your contacts blown out of your eyes, go straight to the “Lowell & Nine-Dub Plate.” It’s underground nuclear testing without the poison. – Tim Hasle (xlr8r.com)

Thursday 08.20.09: DOWN & DERBY ROLLER DISCO with Skate Lessons from BLADE @ echoplex
Posted by damara - filed in 21+, Dance Night, echoplex, events
Down and Derby, the premier roller skating organization that has quickly garnered a loyal following in cities like Las Vegas, Pittsburgh and New York City will host its second Los Angeles event at The Echoplex, Thursday, July 30. Resident skate guard DJs Thee Mike B and Steve 1Der will control the roller disco rink’s turntables, broadcasting amplified sounds for the eight-wheeled revelers.

How ’bout filling your pipe with electro-tinged ho-made hillbilly music? The bass kicking comes in clear, but a clubby paradiddle irks alongside the slide guitar, as if a glowstick got dropped in a barrel o’ moonshine. A beer bottle precariously placed between a jostling knee cap and a tin gasoline can gets smacked by a drumstick thick as a chair leg and goes flying back at the wall. Smash. Hot bodies. Was that out loud? The contours of hot bodies. Ah, this thought has Tourette’s. You must get some very calloused hands from all that working out—I mean streamline pick-less strumming on a gee-tar. Equally intent on experimental beer spilling as percussionist J State, Troy Olaf Murrah slides a botttle up and down his fret board, twanging country roads home to gold-toothed crawdads. In a gruff froggy voice he announces they’re moving to Vancouver, going on hiatus, this will be the last show, which happens to be the (Sparks-sponsored—yay!) release party for Returns to the Tomb of Guiliano Medidici. It’s a joke. Maybe they’ll go to Vancouver, riding a wagon packed full of jangling license plates tied together with bra straps. – LA Record

Wednesday 09.02.09: DUB CLUB presents RICHIE SPICE / SPANNER BANNER @ echoplex
Posted by damara - filed in 21+, Dance Night, echoplex, events
Armed with just a microphone, one-drop rhythms and purifying lyrical flames, singer Richie Spice is the Gideon of contemporary reggae. The publicly declared “prince of fire” uses culturally uplifting, spiritually fortified words to defeat the negative content that informs much of popular (Jamaican) music. Fittingly, Gideon Boot is the title track of Spice’s brilliant fourth album. Recorded over the timeless Johnny Too Bad rhythm (taken from The Slickers 1970s hit of the same name, popularized in the film The Harder They Come) the song details Spice’s strategic plan for delivering his musical sermon to an awaiting global audience. “I need a Gideon boot and a khaki suit to stand out inna Babylon and defend the truth/ I got a strong reggae beat with a mic in my hand fe lead out de youth dem outta destruction and let de people know right from wrong.”
Just like the singer’s previous albums “Universal”, “Spice In Your Life” and “In The
Streets to Africa”, “Gideon Boot” contains inspiring messages specifically aimed at empowering vulnerable youth.
The traditional Rastafarian Nyabinghi drumming that dominates the opening cut “Babylon Falling” heralds the seriousness of Spice’s musical mission. “World Is A Cycle”, sung over producer Arif Cooper’s haunting “Guardian Angel” rhythm, is, as Spice explains, “a song for the children and for the parents saying be careful because what you do can fall right back on you and your kids.”
Also included is the current Jamaican hit “The Plane Land” which display’s Spice’s superb story telling skills. The song’s lyrics detail the frustration that oftentimes accompanies post 9/11travel. “Saddle up myself fe take interrogation…tek off mi shoes, tek off mi tam, if they ever find you with a spliff yu gone another land.” “It is a song everyone can relate to if they travel,” notes Spice, “and if they don’t travel, they will learn this is what we go through as entertainers as we go to other countries.”
Since 2004, when his apocalyptic single “Earth A Run Red” became the year’s most popular reggae song, Richie Spice has performed throughout the world, insuring that cultural roots reggae isn’t relegated to a bygone era but continues as a thriving, evolving musical genre.

“This record is really the least hip-hop out of anything I’ve ever been involved with.” That quote from Yoni Wolf about the follow-up to Why?’s Alopecia gave some fans of the art-rap act reason to pause. Such uneasiness is unwarranted though. Alopecia was also more rock-oriented and was the Anticon. crew’s best. During the Alopecia sessions, Wolf and Co. recorded more songs, ten of which compromise Eskimo Snow. Though both albums were recorded during the February 2007 Minneapolis sessions, the Eskimo tracks avoid the segmented recording of Alopecia, for a more “resigned” and “open” sound. Wolf also noted that Eskimo Snow is a “bit more wild, and the drums have more room mics.” – Prefix Magazine

Saturday 10.17.09: WAVVES / THE SOFT PACK / GANGLIANS @ echoplex
Posted by Brianna - filed in 18+, echoplex, events
Wavves, né Nathan Williams of San Diego, is primed for this environment. He’s young, only 22. His musicianship isn’t stellar (probably due to his age), but it’s crafty. This self-titled debut for Woodsist is littered with addictive riffs, and each soaked in enough distortion and amplifier crust to mask any technical deficiencies. Each backbeat is propulsive, a keen lock onto garage’s incessant energy but with enough of a post-punk edge to keep the turned-up cuffs away. And most important to the kids today, Williams knows how to harmonize, and he is a whiz with the multi-track. With such enhanced vocal melodies and a balls-out style of playing, Wavves is most like a rudimentary West Coast version of Blank Dogs. Or perhaps a Times New Viking with a better post-production mix. Williams may be entering a crowded stable with this musical approach, but the sunnier Southern California temperament of his sound (however distorted) adds a surprisingly welcomed twist to the niche.
Though a solid and promising outing, Wavves isn’t a revelatory record. It fits nicely into the “scene,” however vague that semblance is these days. In a musical community where the one-man frantic punk show of Jay Reatard garnishes high critical praise and manic collector urgency whenever another 7″ drops, Williams is bound to shine. And his somewhat wholesome personality (in comparison, at least) paired with a keener pop sensibility will only further his attraction; think an aesthetic not terribly far from early Beck experiments minus the obsession with rap beats (see “Loser Year”, “Here’s to the Sun”). The world is currently too depressing to just sit back and reflect, we would much rather bang our heads and blindly sing along gleefully. Wavves makes for a perfect outlet. – Dusted Magazine

‘Tradition In Transition’ – recorded in Cali, Colombia – is the upcoming album from Quantic and his Combo Bárbaro, which sees Will ‘Quantic’ Holland mining the lesser-tapped musical sources from the Caribbean, Latin America and Africa and fusing those rediscovered psychedelic, experimental and rhythmically rich sounds of the past with deep funk and soul elements and folkloric vocal styles. The Devil Makes Three || Listen || Watch
The Devil Makes Three has just released the latest chapter of their gypsy-punk-hillbilly-bluegrass-blues gospel in an album called Do Wrong Right. That description is a mouthful, but DM3 is far from ordinary. The drummer-less trio consists of guitarist/frontman Pete Bernhard, stand-up bassist Lucia Turino and guitarist Cooper McBean. Their sound is driven by rhythm and three-part harmonies that beg you to boogie down, even if you aren’t the boogie down type.
Do Wrong Right might change your opinion about what can be done with an acoustic album. Traditional country songs like “Car Wreck” are offset by up-tempo banjo propelled songs like the album’s title track and then followed by brutally honest blues numbers like “Working Man’s Blues.” I haven’t had a chance to see a live show, but the word-of-mouth about their performances is the stuff of legends. From what I hear, hippies, young kids, college students, yuppies and people of all races and religions are dancing and singing along in blissful coexistence. They are on a monstrous cross-country tour this summer, so we’ll all have a chance to find out for ourselves.
While this ragtag band might be a bit loose and rough around the edges, those same qualities are what bring character to their music. The Devil Makes Three have a lively spirit and are bound to win over audiences all over the country, one drinking hole at a time. – HearYa

You’ve got to be pretty heavy to get away with an album title like God Is Good. Lucky for them, psych-droners Om are about as heavy as it gets. The band is set to release their new album this fall, and rest assured the sound will be just as grand as that titular declaration. God Is Good will be the first release for the band on Drag City, and will follow after the excellent Pilgrimage, released in 2007 on Southern Lord. The new album also marks the first studio recording with the band’s new drummer Emil Amos. And that is not the only change coming on this record, apparently. While they won’t be giving up their bottomless heft and relentless riffs, the band promises new and more varied instrumentation on the new record, as they push to expand their
