Anny Celsi & Nelson Bragg
To record her followup album, Tangle-Free World, Anny collaborated with Nelson Bragg, an in-demand drummer, percussionist and vocalist, whose own debut CD Day Into Night had recently established him as a formidable producer and arranger as well. Bragg, who plays with Brian Wilson’s band (he was featured on Wilson’s “Smile” and “Lucky Old Sun” albums), brought to the studio bandmates Nick Walusko, Probyn Gregory (also of the Wondermints), Scott Bennett and Brett Simons. Also contributing to album are Evie Sands, Carl Byron, Amy Farris, Adam Marsland, Robbie Rist, Phil Parlapiano and Anny’s son, Ivan Pyzow.

WAIT. THINK. FAST || Listen || Watch

Singer-pianist Jacqueline Santillan shifts between Spanish and English vocals with an inviting casualness, an approach to contemporary pop that takes a multi-ethnic view for granted. Rare indeed is a band that so comfortably executes West Coast traditions, be it the SoCal country of “Trouble,” the working-class guitar vamp of “Covina,” the Latin lament of “Jornaleras” or the orchestral, Hollywood-ready grandeur of “Bad Night.” Think of it as the musical equivalent of Los Angeles sprawl — without the headaches. – LA Times

Saturday 08.28.10: LIT CRAWL II @ echo

Posted by damara - filed in 21+, echo, events, free show

LitCrawl2Poster

Lit Crawl is an event dedicated to good literature, community and responsible intoxication. The evening begins with author readings and afterwards moves out to occupy neighborhood bars in an orderly/disorderly fashion. Lit Crawls have existed in one form or another since civilization began and are seeing a resurgence throughout the literate world. LitQuake is putting on great crawls in San Francisco and New York.

On August 28th, Lit Crawl 2 starts at the Echo with a good ole fashioned, ‘no holds barred’ read off*. Eleven authors will compete and the audience will decide the winner. After the main event crawlers will set out to El Prado, The Gold Room, The Little Joy and The Shortstop.

Start following PEN’s twitter to receive live Crawl updates – after the first bar you’ll need ‘em.

If you need a break from crawling or feel inspired to perform your own verse Stories Bookshop will be hosting an open mic.

Our MC’s will be Laurie Ochoa and Joe Donnelly editors of Slake Literary Journal + the lovely and talented Carolyn Kellogg of the Los Angeles Times

Our Authors:
Katie Arnoldi
Allison Burnett
Gabrielle Calvocoressi
Dennis Danziger
Samantha Dunn
James Greer
Edan Lepucki

Monday 09.27.10: Monday Night Residency PACIFIC HURT / VANAPRASTA @ echo

vanaprasta

Vanaprasta || Listen || Watch

L.A. quintet Vanaprasta has come a long way since they got inside my head with their nifty guitar work last March. Not so far that they have an album out yet — that’ll happen when “Heathy Geometry” is released later this year — but far enough that their dramatic blend of churning rhythms, bright riffage and glowing imagery sounds ready for big stages. The band — Collin Desha, Steven Wilkin, Taylor Brown, Cameron Dmytryk and Ben Smiley — traveled to Portland late last year to record, and the initial results of those sessions, the “Forming the Shapes” EP, will be out next month. Vanaprasta will also contribute a cover of LCD Soundsystem’s “All My Friends” to a forthcoming L.A. charity compilation, “Uncovering a Cure.” On the EP version of their album’s title song, Vanaprasta takes some liberties with the word “geometry,” but their math works for me.- Buzz Bands

While some things change — as in, say, a band’s name switching from Aushua to Pacific Hurt — some things remain very much the same. Their moniker may have morphed, but Pacific Hurt’s sound still hues closely to the sweeping and sleek intricate rockers that made their Limbo disc the best local EP of last year. – Web In Front

Thursday 08.19.10: WALLPAPER. / CHAIN GANG OF 1974 @ Pershing Square

Posted by damara - filed in All Ages, events, free show

wallpaper

Wallpaper. || Listen || Watch

Partway through recording his debut LP as Wallpaper., Eric Frederic lost his shit. The Oakland artist was neck-deep in a series of isolated studio all-nighters to put him in the mood, when the song “Doodoo Face” pushed him into the beyond. Boxed in by layers of percussive funk, dark synthesizer blurt and crushing bass, Frederic lost himself inside of Ricky Reed, the character he’d long ago conceived as Wallpaper.’s frontman. He gave in to Ricky’s rampant narcissism, love for party and supreme indifference, and as a result, discovered the guiding duality behind Doodoo Face, the album: There’s sadness inside all that celebration. A little madness too.

At a certain point in the making of Doodoo Face, Frederic regained some sanity. He stopped trying to figure Ricky out, and focused his mental efforts on production. The music of Doodoo Face is a significant step forward for Wallpaper. As established by his recent “live-band remixes” for Passion Pit and Das Racist, Frederic’s become ace at merging the organic into the electronic. This time, the drums are live courtesy of band member Arjun Singh, Darondo sideman Brian Switzer plays trumpet, and Frederic’s own guitar graces many tracks. These are huge beats with infinite intricacy — the perfect tribute to Frederic’s oldest influences: P-Funk, Afrobeat, and the panoply of Bay Area rap. You’ll hear strains of Justice too, in the seething bass of “Celebrity,” and even Eno in the minimalist pop of “Fine GF.” Furthermore, “Frk Scn” not only features female vocals, but a distinct live Ghanaian rhythm known as “Ewe,” while on “Gettin’ Drip,” Frederic handcrafts his own “chipmunk soul” sample to accompany the chorus.

Gamble House || Listen

Ben Becker’s self-titled recorded debut as Gamble House, sees his one-time bedroom recording project flourish into an astonishing full-fledged album. Written, recorded and produced by Ben, Gamble House is at once as intimate and warm as the homes within which it was made, yet incredibly refined and as sonically dynamic as the vision that it seeks to capture. Mastered by Paul Gold (Animal Collective, Dirty Projectors) in Brooklyn, the results are rich in both clarity and scope. Selection from Gamble House will performed live at Pershing Square.

teeninc

Teen Inc – 9pm

Walking into Eagle Rock’s Showcave recently to see the first-ever performance of Teen Inc. was a little like being in the audience during that scene in Back to the Future when Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly riffs on Chuck Berry’s guitar stylings. I wasn’t sure exactly what I was hearing: There were hints of something familiar, plaintive vocals reminiscent of Prince, with traces of pop, funk, R&B and club-esque Balearic beats layered with the production styles of a D’Angelo or Dam-Funk. But one thing was clear: The heartfelt, complex sound is completely cutting edge. To date, the still unsigned quartet—fronted by brothers Andrew and Daniel Aged, both former studio musicians for Raphael Saadiq, Steve Miller, Cee-Lo and Pharrell Williams—has only a two-song EP, Fountains/Friend of the Night, which they produced, mixed and recorded themselves. With a full-length album in the works, it’s a lock that their current limited output is a temporary condition. – LA Times Magazine

Fat Man and Little Boy: The Atomic Duo (Featuring Mark Rubin from The Bad Livers)

“Fat Man & Little Boy: the Atomic Duo,” is the latest project from Bad Livers founder Mark Rubin featuring the hot mandolin and plaintive vocals of young Silas Lowe. This release marks Rubin’s first foray into American folk music since the last Bad Livers CD almost a decade ago, and is the first recording he has made as a singer and guitarist. Inspired by the great “Brother” vocal duets and string bands of the Depression era and formed on a dare, Rubin and Lowe have in a very short time risen to the vanguard of the emerging re-interest in acoustic roots Americana in their home of Austin TX.

Bomba Estéreo

Straight out of Bogota’s exhilarating underground electronic music scene, Bomba Estéreo brings an explosive dance fusion of hip-hop and dub to the Getty. Afro Colombian cumbia and champeta rhythms are deftly layered under surf guitar, keyboards, and bass beats, while singer Liliana Saumet’s fierce dance hall vocals lend fire to the fresh coastal sounds.

Also performing: Jorge Verdín is Clorofila, of the acclaimed Nortec Collective, who collides banda and cumbia with drum machines and electronica in an ecstatic, tropical Nortec (“norteño” + “techno”) style.

Enjoy outdoor music and evening views of the city and drink in the refreshing summer exhibitions in a casual and spontaneous atmosphere. The evenings feature performances by your soon-to-be favorite bands, along with DJ sets to open and close the night.

Plus, don’t miss the free Spotlight After Dark tours in the galleries. Join in a provocative 20-minute exploration and discussion of art with a Getty Museum educator. Tours depart at 6:00 and 7:00pm.

A cash bar serves Getty-tinis and more, and the Garden Terrace Cafe offers sandwiches, salads, and other nibbles (both until 8:30pm).

Dawes || Listen

Dawes is a folk-rock rookie true to its Cali roots with music in vintage Laurel Canyon style: full of twangy melodies, dusty singalong, and ripping lead guitar. Fusing intimate introspection with bursting optimism, the band has won fans on the road with standout lyrics and evocative indie-folk harmonies.

Also performing: L.A.’s best music blogger, Justin Gage of Aquarium Drunkard, spins an eclectic set that bridges the gap between indie, folk, country, New Orleans funk, r&b, soul, and vintage garage.

Posted by damara - filed in All Ages, echo, events, free show

Los Angeles-based collective New Texture presents a rare West Coast appearance by TALES OF TIMES SQUARE author Josh Alan Friedman. Josh Alan will read from BLACK CRACKER—an autobiographical novel of his years as the lone white boy at the last segregated school in New York—culminating in a scalding acoustic set on guitar.

He’ll be joined by L.A. punk icon Chris D. (The Flesh Eaters, Divine Horsemen), presenting his collection A MINUTE TO PRAY, A SECOND TO DIE, and writer Wyatt Doyle, reading from STOP REQUESTED—a collaboration with Stanley J. Zappa set on the buses of L.A.

With a visit from the legendary Georgina Spelvin (THE DEVIL MADE ME DO IT), a musical appearance by Rev. Raymond Branch (host of Inglewood’s RAINBOW GOSPEL HOUR on KTYM since 1971), Donna Lethal and many more special guests.

Rainbow Arabia || Listen || Watch

Real-life married couple and make-believe werewolf shop-crashers Tiffany and Daniel Preston, who comprise Rainbow Arabia, are based in LA, but their music spans the spooky expanses of this over-warmed ozone-choked globe. Most prominently, Tiffany’s vocal lines tend to come oil-drenched and wailing from the Middle East, while the percussion and other tidbits of electronic mayhem rounding out the soundfield are a dark (but undeniably bouncy) who’s who of global fusion motifs.

On their second mini-album Kabukimono, the duo turn in only five new songs and a Ghosts On Tape Remix of the riotous Omar K (that of the bizarre music video) from their first EP, 2008′s The Basta. The whole thing clocks in at just over 21 minutes, but this isn’t really something to complain about. If anything, Rainbow Arabia avoid the all too enticing allure of settling into a groove and flogging it to the ground while the dancers pant from exhaustion. – MusicOMH

Saturday 05.08.10: SATURDAYS OFF THE 405 with LES SAVY FAV @ The Getty

Posted by damara - filed in All Ages, events, free show

May82010405

Les Savy Fav || Listen || Watch

Fridays Off the 405 are now Saturdays Off the 405! The free outdoor performance series is back on Saturday nights this summer with a lively mix of today’s most exciting emerging bands and DJ sets to open and close the night. And starting this summer, parking is free at the Getty Center on Saturdays after 5pm.

Lead singer Harrington appeared on stage wrapped in toilet paper on top of his red-striped shirt. After mumbling something about how he got into an accident, and that the toilet paper reminded him of a tampon, he bounced around stage for a couple tracks before getting bored and jetting over to the stairs leading up to the VIP section, despite not having a cordless mic. He hooked his feet in the bars to make an airplane with his body before finding two foot stools to use as sleds back down the stairs. Over the duration of the show, he then stripped, donned a brown shower curtain for a cloak, duct taped himself to fans, wandered some more into the audience, used someone’s cell phone, put a bucket over his head and constructed a smiley face out of duct tape, peeled a banana and stuck the end of it in a photographer’s mouth, found a straw hat, passed around a large bag of tortilla chips to the audience, and changed into an actual shirt for the encore. While still singing.

Somehow though, I knew opening the show with something like “The Equestian” was going to breed some psychosis from audience members. The furious track begins with Jabour’s heated guitar plucking, and dance anthem songs like “Patty Lee” only carry the crowd into more destructive oblivion. But for all the mad performance jumping jacks Harrington laid on us that night, I’m relieved to know that as a band LSF has some real rock meat underneath the craziness of their lead singer, even if they themselves look bewildered and slightly mortified at times by Harrington. – Tripwire

Monday 05.31.10: Monday Night Residency – THE LIKE / THE YOUNG VEINS / THE LIVING SICKNESS @ echo

The Like || Watch

Formed in 2001 during their formative mid-teen years, Los Angeles’ The Like have transformed from indie-alt rock kids to a polished troupe of young ladies who create nouveau retro pop-rock with a sassy twist. Rooted in the era of early 60s British pop girl groups, this foursome have a sleek and signature sound that caught the attention of Mark Ronson (he’s producing their new album, due out in June) and The Arctic Monkeys, with whom they recently joined on tour.

Paired up with Zac Posen for the launch of his new line at Target last night, The Like performed a full set for early shoppers and fans. One thing we noticed about their performance, and that we loved to the max…the band goes straight from one song into the next. No banter in between and as the last chord of one song hits, the drum beat of the next one begins. Stylish and seamless!

We can’t wait to hear the album, especially Wishing He Was Dead, which quickly became our favorite song by the girls. It’s got a Doors’ organ vibe meshed with the soulful nature of The Shirelles. – Sheena Beaston

SQUARE ON SQUARE

Music doesn’t feel so much like a business to Evan Slamka these days, and the Los Angeles singer-songwriter likes it just fine.

With his new quintet Square on Square, Slamka has emerged from three-plus years of personal reflection and creative regeneration that followed the dissolution of Majorie Fair, which released one excellent album (”Self Help Serenade”) for Capitol Records before sinking into the major-label abyss. The music on SOS’s forthcoming five-song EP, “Spectrum of Love,” brims with the same keen melodicism and British Invasion shading as Slamka’s previous work, except now everything — from arrangements to themes — seems larger than life. – Buzz Bands LA

Andrew Lynch || Watch

Crafting mordant pop songs in the vein of Randy Newman, Josh Ritter or Jeff Tweedy, Lynch consistently hides fractured characters, twisted narratives, and bittersweet love stories beneath cryptic metaphors and shimmering production. “My Head Around”, an orchestral, mid-tempo rocker moves along so smoothly that it takes the whole song to realize the narrator is not smitten by love but beaten down and blind sided, his head turned backwards to the mistake he is about to make. “This Bird” layers a tale of a man imprisoned who can’t fight his murderous tendencies over catchy, jangly, piano and staccato strings. “The Thrill Is Gone” paints a portrait of a relationship gone sour and the vices we use to hide the truth from ourselves and fool ourselves into staying against a bombastic musical backdrop featuring downbeat guitar and grandiloquent horns and bells.

Sun Incisions is a wonderful album that will reveal more and more upon every listen. Lynch uses unique perspectives and unreliable narrators to create a bittersweet world of insecurities and foibles that seems sentimental, comical, twisted and relatable at the same time. – Radio Free Silverlake

Tuesday 06.22.10: SEASONS / TENLONS FORT / DEATH TO ANDERS / MAGICK ORCKIDS @ echo

seasons

Seasons || Watch

Seasons have the dynamics of psychedelic rock without the grimy cloud of sonic smoke that makes all psych rock sound the same. (You don’t hear the psychedelic influence on the recordings as much as you do seeing them live.) The songwriting itself, conversely, can actually be pretty poppy at times. They have the intellectual curiosity, whimsy, and thoughtfulness of aughty indie rock in the vein of The Arcade Fire. The lead singer is animated but serious and emotional, and still intensely mysterious. There’s seven guys in the band, so the soundscape is crowded and you benefit most from their live set by shiting your ear’s perspective to individual members of the band, then back to the whole spectacular soup of sound. The mutual participation and equity between band members on stage is an enormous part of their identity.

I’ve seen them three times and never left feeling anything other than “Jesus. Whoa.” Their song “Empty Spaceships” liberates repressed feeling, and then leaves one with a an oppressive sense of comfort instead. – Classical Geek Theatre

Halloween Swim Team || Listen || Watch

Halloween Swim Team’s new single, “Pitch Black,” is now available for streaming from their website. Self-described as “electronic space pop prog kraut suck,” Halloween Swim Team definitely has an unusual sound. Plus, they’ve got some great music videos. Check out the video for “Thin Airlines” from their last release, The End of the Sky, for a truly strange and psychedelic mix of floating cats, swirling keyboards, and tiger finger puppets. That video alone is reason enough to check out their latest single.

“Pitch Black” has a synthpop feel with electronic drum beats that are somehow both charming and abrasive. It’s far catchier than their previous work, with an air of confidence that surely translates into their live shows.- LA Record

Web in Front favorites the Flying Tourbillon Orchestra have trimmed down their name, while doing nothing to scale back the Lee and Nancy-meets-Scott Walker pristine indie pop for which they are known–the band is now Walking Sleep, and their sound thankfully remains the same. Further, their upcoming debut, Measures, is stunning, and you can hear a few tracks here. – Web In Front

Six-member indie rock outfit Walking Sleep, from LA, are set to release their debut full-length album, Measures, on May 25. I hadn’t heard a thing about them until we received an email with an accompanying mp3 today, and well, I lapped it up. The song, “Final Chapter”, shows tremendous promise for the album as a whole, mixing precious guy girl vocals with hand claps and an upbeat guitar driven background alongside subtle hints of psychedelia. (The female vocalist is Sara Radle, formerly of The Rentals.) The album was produced by Aaron Espinoza, who has previously worked with a KR favorite, Earlimart, among others. – Knox Road

So I’m sure you guys all know we’re opening the Los Angeles chapter of Мишка on February 20th in Echo Park. The shop will open at noon and there will be exclusives, Spring 2010 product and just an all-around jovial atmosphere. From 7-9pm we’ll also be having an opening reception in the shop with some drinks and music and invite everyone from the community and greater Los Angeles area to come by. But as soon as that’s over we’re going to show the West one of those things we do best, and that’s throw a party! And boy do we have a party for you guys…

It’ll be a riotous evening as we brought in DJs like your West Coast Dubstep Champion, 12th Planet who’ll be doing a set w/ Ras Kass (yes that Ras Kass), Franki Chan of IHEARTCOMIX and the Killing Spree duo of Gibby & Zane is Trouble who’ll bring the dark and dancey to the dance floor. And if that wasn’t already enough for a great party, we couldn’t not have a few bands perform now could we? We brought in West Coast Lo-Fi heavy weight such as Wavves and Best Coast along with very awesome The Franks to keep the party rocking all night long. But wait… that still isn’t everything! The cherry on top of it all is that your host of the evening will be none other than Andy Milonakis, who’ll be gracing you all with laughs and I’m sue a few impromptu freestyles. Who knows, he may even battle the elusive Turd Wolf if we get enough liquor in him.

The Delta Mirror || Listen || Watch || MP3

A certain strain of recent indie rock seems to be taking an unusual interest in illness and death. You could blame Arcade Fire, the sad loss of whose family members only happened to lead to one of the most universally acclaimed independent releases of the past decade. Last year, the Antlers’ Hospice focused an entire album on the subject of a man with terminal bone cancer. Now L.A. trio the Delta Mirror’s upcoming Lefse debut, Machines That Listen, sets each of its nine songs in a different room of the hospital.
This slow, layered ballad “He Was Worse Than the Needle He Gave You” stands out not for its pathos-ridden subject matter– I’m still not sure I know exactly what it’s about– but rather its restrained emotional gutpunch, which it achieves with a simple but catchy tune and dramatically expansive production. Imagine the Big Pink’s electro-shoegaze explosions sounding vulnerable. “I’ve got too much time on my hands,” goes a gothy male vocal, and before long we find out the reason why– and the guy responsible won’t fucking be held responsible. The next time the Delta Mirror sing those words, at the end of the song, their meaning has changed. Damage done. – Pitchfork

The Frequency || Listen || Watch || MP3

Haven’t posted a 15 minute plus track on here in ages – actually, come to think of it I’m not sure I ever have, which is a travesty as most of the best songs stretch to a good quarter of an hour.

LA’s The Frequency aren’t afraid to take you on a pyschedelic meander and this opus clocks in at 17’34″, rinsing your ears with woozy slide guitar for a quick four minutes before taking you off to planet pachouli for an epic trip that’s by turns Jonestowny, Floydy and Spiritualizedy.

So slow down, stop, turn off Twitter and shut out the outside world for a bit. Or play Battleships. – NME
